正直言って、松平忠輝については、本作を読むまでは知らなかった。
この作品をもとに、宝塚で『野風の笛』として上演されたらしい。
家康に「鬼子」として疎まれ、周囲の嫌忌の中で育った捨て童子。
長じてからは、武芸に秀で、語学、医術にも通じた大名に。
しかし、その才を秀忠に嫌われ、改易されてしまう。
それでいて、蟄居しながらも長寿を全うする。
まさに異能の人物。
その破天荒な生き方に憧れを抱きつつも、そこはかとない哀しみを感じずにはいられない。
この松平忠輝という人物に出会わせてくれた隆慶一郎に、感謝の二字を贈りたいのである。

徳川家康の第六子で、幼い頃から容貌魁偉、鬼子と忌み嫌われた松平忠輝を主人公にした、著者が完成させることのできた最後の長編時代小説です。

まず「捨て童子」という言葉に注目。著者は「捨て子」と「捨て童子」はまるで別物、人が畏れ慄くような途方もないエネルギーを持った異形の者と説明、松平忠輝を類い稀なる能力を持った智勇兼備の男とし、将軍職を奪われるのではないかと怖れる徳川秀忠とその配下の柳生一族と戦わせ、そこに大久保長安事件や伊達政宗の遣欧使節、大阪の陣等の史実をうまく取り入れ挿みこんで、途中でだらけるようなこともなく、激動の時代とそこで凄絶に生きた男たちの姿を描ききっています。

また、『影武者徳川家康』の中でわからずじまいだった、大久保長安の暗殺者が本文でわかるのですが、それでいてこちらでは家康影武者説を採用していない。それぞれの作品がお互いにリンクしているようで、完全にはしていない。そんなつながりを見つけるのも楽しみの一つです。

この本の中に次の一節があります。

　動物も魚も、忠輝の友達であり、遊び仲間なのだ。誰が友達を捕らえて飼ったり、まして友達を食べたりするだろうか。忠輝は肉も魚も一切口にしない。食うのは野菜と味噌と米だけだった。
＊＊＊

　忠輝の生涯はどんなであったか。柳生との戦い、傀儡子の娘、雪との出会い、死。・・・
秀頼との不戦の誓い・・・。鬼っ子忠輝のこころはどんなだったのでしょうか


愛しいは、「かなしい」と読むのでしょうか

影武者徳川家康にも出てくる『松平忠輝』が主人公。
異能の鬼子に牙を剥く兄・秀忠。横山光輝の手により漫画化もされているが、そちらも必読。
