　1987年に出た単行本の文庫化。
　「素人包丁記」シリーズの第１冊。
　嵐山氏が究極の「食」を追求した本である。といっても、かならずしも美食を探すのではない。むしろ食の実験といった方がいいだろう。
　タケノコの章をとってみれば、火事にあった竹林から掘り出したタケノコが美味いと聞き、オープンで土ごと焼いてみたりするのだ。結果はいまいちだったようだが、その執念がすごい。ほかにもジャムのおむすびを考えてみたり、カレーの風呂を構想してみたり。
　恐ろしいけれど面白い。食の世界がどこまでも広がっていくような、独特のアイデアに満ちた本であった。
　どんどん下手物の方向に進んでしまうのが、ちょっと残念。
