寂れつつある街に、何気なく生活している若者の友人と恋人が殺された。
恋人のことを何も知らない自分に気づいた若者は、恋人の過去を辿り、恋人の性格と過去の事件から、今の事件の全貌をつかんでいく...。
若者の悲しみと怒り、苦悩が伝わってくる作品で、最後まで興味を失うことなく、読後感も悪くない。完成度が高い作品だと思う。

東野圭吾の4作目は、2作目の『卒業』の姉妹編のような作品です。『卒業』に出てきた大学の周辺が今作でも舞台になっています。大学の正門の位置が変わった為に旧来の学生街がさびれ、新たな正門の周囲に新学生街ができるのですが、『卒業』は新学生街を舞台としており、『学生街の殺人』は廃れつつある旧学生街を舞台にしています。主人公も、『卒業』では就職を控えた大学生だったのに対し、今作では卒業したものの定職につかずブラブラしているフリーターです。この2作の設定はまるでコインの裏表のようです。

これまでのところ、東野圭吾は4作連続で密室トリックを用いています。今作の密室はマンションのエレベーターを用いたもの。被害者はエレベーターの上昇中にその中で殺されたと思われます。犯人がそこから逃げるには階段で下りるしかないはずなのですが、目撃者が1階から最上階まで階段を上る最中だったにもかかわらず、すれ違わないという謎が描かれています。真相の発覚と共に、被害者の本当の気持ちが主人公にわかってしまうところがなんとも切ないですね。

東野圭吾のデビュー第4作です。
まずタイトルがいいですね。『学生街の殺人 』という誰にも身近に感じる街をイメージできるわけで、その設定からしてワクワクします。
推理小説に対するコメントはネタバレにならないように注意して少しだけ感想を・・・。

多くの登場人物が複雑に入り乱れ絡み合って物語の進行と共に新しい局面を次々と提示していきます。
普通、推理小説といいますと犯人探しが主目的なのですが、本書はそれに加えて、背景の人間関係のからみを横糸に、殺意にいたる過程を縦糸に用いながらその構造を上手に描いています。
キーワードともいえる、寂びれた「学生街」も重要な役回りが与えられていますので、この小説のモティーフは上手くいったと思います。

主人公の犯罪の解明への執念は、大切な人の思いを自分の中で咀嚼することにより最後までやり遂げられました。鮮やかなどんでん返しともいえるエンディングに辿りつくまで、殺意や犯人像が見えないように工夫されていたのは感心しました。

本書における殺人の動機というのも、なんとなく理解できますが、それ以上に複雑な人間関係に張り巡らされた複線の数々に関心を持ちました。理系出身である東野圭吾の頭の中身を垣間見たような精緻な構造を持った小説ですので、読み応えは十分です。
飽きずに最後まで一気に読みましたね。
