ご存知の通り、著者には障害を持った息子さんがいらっしゃいます。
そして、その息子さんとの関わりを題材に小説を書いておられます。
この本もそういう本です。

語り手の僕は、息子イーヨーと自らを一体のものとしてとらえてきた。
ところが、ヨーロッパ旅行を終えて帰ってきてみると、そんな息子が「パパは死んでしましました！」と叫び、暴力的な態度をとる。
ここに、僕は新たな危機の到来を予感し、それを乗り越えるためにブレイクを読み、今までの人生をとらえなおして、小説を書き綴ってゆく。
その危機とは、僕自身の死である。
僕が死んだ後、イーヨーは一人取り残され、生きてゆかねばならない。
イーヨーは生きてゆけるのだろうか。
ある日、内に秘めている暴力、性欲を解き放った結果、憎まれ、殺されるのではないか。
僕はそのような恐怖にとらわれるが、それは同時に、少年時に父親を失った僕自身の恐怖でもある。

このような恐れの克服の過程は、一言では言い表せないが、最後にイーヨーは、父親から独立した一人の人間として、「新しい人」として現れてくる。
そして、イーヨーは決して一人ではなく、同じく「新しい人」である弟とともに確実に、強く生きてゆくであろうことがはっきりと伝わってくる。
僕はそれを感じ取った瞬間に、自らが死んだとしても、息子たちが生きることによって、また、自分も一人の「新しい人」として再生しうることを知り、死へ立ち向かう勇気を得る。

難しい小説で、正直なところ、よく分からない部分も多々あったけれど、それでも、読み終わった瞬間に希望が、光り輝くような希望が、胸に満ち溢れるようでした。

「万延元年・・・」「個人的・・・」に並ぶ、大江氏の代表作品です。

ブレイクの詩作を引用し、それを主人公自身の日常体験をもとに、相互的に解釈してゆく、といった内容の作品です。この作品は、僕としては、知的にコントロールされた文体も難解すぎず、とても充実した読書体験をすることができました。最終章の終わりに綴られた文章は暗記してしまいました。大江氏の作品の中でも、特におすすめします。

イーヨーを中心とした父、母、妹、弟の関係の中で、いくつかの組み合わせのやり取りのある中で、兄妹弟の中でのやり取りが将来に希望のもてる興味深いものでした。妹弟は、両親がイーヨーにかかりっきりになっている感情を抱きながらも、各々の成長も表現されているところが安心しました。

障害をもつ人の自立は、障害をもたない人の自立以上に時間も忍耐もかかるわけですが、それを不器用に試行錯誤しながら奮闘している主人公に心が震えると思います。
本作品では、特にイーヨーの断片的な言葉が効果的で、後半部分ではその登場を楽しみに待ちながら読み進めましたが、これが救いの言葉であったのかもしれません。
