旭川と札幌を結ぶ国道12号は、道内の基幹道路。
道の途中、空知太には「直線道路日本一」のモニュメントが建つ。
29.2kmに及ぶ直線道路の左右には商業施設が櫛比し、観光客にとってさえ退屈な風景に映る。
けれど今から約140年前のこの地は、全く未開の原野だった。
寒気激しく荒涼としたこの地の開拓に命を散らして行ったのは、明治期北海道に収監された囚人たちである。

本書は明治14年、樺戸集治監設置から大正8年の廃止まで、約40年に及ぶ北海道監獄史を描く記録小説。
主役というべき主役はおらず、精密な資料批判を元とし、囚人労働の事実を描いてゆく。
幌内・アトサヌプリなどの鉱山労働、そして明治20年代に本格化した中央道路の開削。
政府高官により「モトヨリ暴戻ノ徒」とされた囚人たちは「斃死スルモ」、
「監獄費支出の困難を告グル今日ニオイテ、万止ムヲ得ザル政略ナリ」であり「コレ実ニ一挙両全の策」とされた。

囚人たちはほとんど言葉を発しない。読者に突き付けられるのは「犠牲者」という冷徹なまでの"数字"である。
初めて作中で彼らの一人が発した言葉は
「極楽」
雪中の護送の末、たった一杯の味噌汁にありついた時の一言である。
悲憤に満ちた激越さなと欠片もない抑制された筆致で、だからこそ逆に読者の胸を深く圧迫する"実録"の凄みがある。
吉村記録文学の粋と言っていい。

今から数年前、僕はこの中央道路の跡を旅した。市来知から空知、旭川から北見峠を越えて網走へ。
北見峠、遠軽町瀬戸瀬、端野町緋牛内。沿道の数箇所に、そこに倒れた囚人たちの慰霊碑があった。
鉄丸をはめられたまま、名も残さずに散って行った「赤い人」
北海道の空の下で感じた、胸の塞がるような想いを忘れられない。

毎年北海道を旅する私にとって、北海道の道路は欠かせない。
しかし、この道路建築は暗い歴史が土台となっていた。
本書は北海道への入植、囚人収容施設、炭山開発、アイヌとの関わり等、北海道の歴史をなぞることができる懇親の一作だ。

旅の見方が変わるかもしれないと同時に、北海道という大地の歴史を、もう少し深く学びたいと思わせてくれた一冊だった。

わが国では、今でこそ刑が軽すぎることが問題視されているが、かつてはこれほどまでに厳罰主義だったのかと驚嘆させられる。
いや、刑罰以前の問題で、囚人の人権など微塵も無かった訳だ。
筆致があくまで客観的であるため、余計に痛々しさが強く伝わってくる。
吉村昭さんでなければ書けなかったと思います。
