デビュー作　風の歌をきけ　と　大作　羊をめぐる冒険の合間の作品でわりと地味とという評価が多いが　美しさと言う点では傑出した作品である。冒頭の井戸掘りの話からはじまり　最後は１１月の雨で終わる本作は　いたるところに水のイメージに満ち溢れている。そんな愛らしい小品ではある一方　前期村上春樹の一大命題である「直子」という女性が早くも登場し　その悲劇性は既にノルウェイの森を予感させるものがある。
個人的にはとても好きです。

翻訳事務所を経営し、それなりに安定した生活を送っている僕。アパートにはなぜか双子の女の子が居候していて、故郷の町では親友の鼠が悩みながらも生きている。その昔に何度も遊んだピンボール・マシンにどうしても会いたくなった僕は探索を始めるが…。

村上氏本人が指摘しているように、その後の作品群の方向性が、この小説に暗示されています。ねじまき鳥クロニクルで中心テーゼとなる「井戸」のメタファーや、色濃い死の香りと言った、村上ワールドの根幹をなす要素が随所に散りばめられています。

処女作の「風の歌を聴け」と「羊をめぐる冒険」のはざまで、やや影が薄い作品ですが、繰り返し読むに耐える素晴らしい小説です。何時読んでも不思議な発見があり、深層意識の旅に連れて行ってもらえます。

村上作品に何を感じるかは人それぞれだと思う。僕にとってはこの作品は彼の作品の中で一番リアリティを感じてしまう。１９７０年代僕もピンボールに夢中だった。淡々と異性と付き合い、ビールを毎日飲み、思想もなく、当然にそこに政治もなかった。彼の作品の「こちら」と「あちら」が渾然一体となった生活があったのは事実だと思う。それがこの作品以降明確に分離する。僕にとっては村上作品の出発点はこの作品からだと思う。彼の原点を知る上でも外すことの出来ない作品であるのは間違いないと思う。是非とも読んでみて欲しい。
