栄光ある1兆円企業トヨタ自動車の暗黒部分を活写した潜入ルポ。
効率化重視の行き着く先を読者の眼前に展開させる。
ベルト組み立て作業＝絶望作業という図式を、イヤというほど思いしる作品だ。

本作は１９７２年作品だが、ロボットが導入された今も基本は変わっていないという話しだ。
以前として直接部門の過労死、精神疾患、自殺は後を絶たないという。
マスコミ（五大新聞含め）はほとんど報道しない。　それはトヨタが大広告主だからだ。

人間を隷属させ徹底的に搾りとる企業というものはなにか？
なにがそこまでさせるのか？　　

”これは大昔の話しさ”、ではすまない。今もなお存在する話しなのだ。
我々は月の表ばかり見ているものだという事実を知った。

内容は他の方が書いている通り、トヨタの季節労働者のお話。
半端ではない厳しい労働状況が報告されている。
心理描写が巧みであるし、生々しく、フィクションであるかのように
ノンフィクションの話が展開される。

文章の書き方も巧みであるし、本としての構成も巧み。
内容も、あの絶好調のトヨタの足元に一体何があるのかということを教えてくれる、
社会というものについて考えさせられるすばらしい本。
まだあと１０年以上はその価値を保ち続けると思われる。

本書は「潜入取材」によるルポタージュの傑作として知られる。季節工として働きながら体験されたルポは、やはり力強く説得力が有る。お金を貰いながら内部の情報を得られ一石二鳥のこの手法は、その後随分模倣されたという。私は学生時代、トヨタの下請けのアルバイトで実際工場に幾度も出入りした体験が有る。幸いにも外部下請けのバイトゆえ、ここに描かれた日常の様にきつくは無かったが、やはり工場という場所は危険に満ちているし、肉体の健康にも精神衛生にも恵まれた環境では無い。実際、私たちがメンテナンスしているすぐ傍で、本書に登場する様な季節工が転落事故を起こし、救急車で運ばれる場面を目撃した。残念ながら即死だったそうだ。またある時は、私の様なアルバイトが、目の前で手を歯車に巻き込まれ大ケガを負った。そんな体験をもっているからなおさらなのかも知れないが、このルポはリアルに迫り、労働と仕事というものについて考えさせられてしまう。日本が経済大国であるのも大企業のお陰であるが、その縁の下では犠牲となる人々、使い捨てにされる人々がいることを忘れてはならないだろう。これから生涯の「仕事」を選択しようとする若者にも、こうした埃臭い現実と向き合ってみる必要があるだろう。本書はその疑似体験を味わえる。
