今はなき探偵小説専門誌「幻影城」に連載された花葬シリーズを中心にまとめられた短編集。時代性の活写・情景描写の美しさと人間の情念の深さをみごとなまでに凝縮している。この作家の他の作品にありがちな極端なトリッキー性も薄く、直木賞受賞作「恋文」への道程を示す作品ともいえるだろう。

個人的には「六花の印」が一押し。思わず目頭があつくなる佳品である。

『恋文』などが最近だと有名で、もしかしたら恋愛小説の作家さんというイメージが強いかも知れません。多分ですが。
でもこの作家さん、日本を代表する超一級ミステリ作家さんなのです。
元々、伝説のミステリ誌『幻影城』でデビューなさってますし。
で、日本ミステリ史上に輝く金字塔である、代表作がこちら。
先述した事と矛盾するようですが、ミステリとか何とかを軽く超えて、文学作品として大変な高水準であると思います。
ミステリのファンでも、そうでなくても、小説読みの方に是非お勧めしたい傑作。
「花」にまつわる、耽美的で、詩情、叙情性溢れる名編が詰まってます。
勿論、ミステリとしてハイパー。論理が背後であまねく支配しています。
で、小説として面白いんですこれが。
嗚呼、素晴らしき大正浪漫。

◆「桔梗の宿」

　死体が握っていた一輪の白桔梗。
　
　二つの殺人事件を繋ぐこの花は
　〈ダイイング・メッセージ〉なのか、
　あるいは何かの〈見立て〉なのか？

　結末で浮かび上がるのは、犯人の巧緻な
　策略ではなく、哀しくも切実な動機だった…。


　人の行動が自分の想いとは裏腹に作用し、まったく
　望まない構図に収斂させられてしまうという悲劇。



◆「桐の柩」

　男と女の何重にも捩れた情念の交錯、そして
　「柩」と「死体」の関係における逆説的な着想―。

　やくざの世界という舞台設定と骨絡みの
　トリックの鮮烈さに眩暈すら覚えます。



◆「白蓮の寺」

　幼少の記憶に焼き付けられた凄絶な母の姿。
　果たして母は、父を殺したのか？

　
　自らの「記憶」に翻弄された主人公が最後に直面するのは、寄って立つ
　現実が崩れ去るが如き「真実」と愚かしくも美しい人の情念です。



◆「戻り川心中」

　二度の心中未遂事件で、二人の女を死に追いやり、
　その情死行を歌に遺して自害した天才歌人。

　彼が求めていたのは何だったのか？


　我々は「作者」と「作品」の間に密接な
　関連性を見出さないではいられません。

　そんな思い込みこそが本作の犯行の不可欠な要素となっているのです。

　犯人が狂おしい妄念を燃やして描き出した幻の花。
　彼は自らの命を賭すことで、決して色褪せない永遠の花を手にしたのです。
