　すべてはフィクションなのに、地に足の着いた、リアリティを感じられる要素がそこかしこに詰め込まれている。著者は初めて自分のホームで作品を書いたのかもしれない。著者のほかの作品のように、エンターテイメント性を高めようとして生じる上滑りした感覚は感じられない。

　石版や粘土板、パピルスの時代から存在する、記録を残したい、誰かに伝えたいという人類の欲望は、本という形を持って我々のそばにいる。その記録は、幾星霜の月日を飛び越え、普通ならば知りようも無い過去の出来事を教えてくれる。
　同時に、本はただ楽しみを与えてくれるツールでもある。そんな本に魅了され、命に代えても手に入れようという人物がいたとしても、ボクは不思議には思わない。それは、本を置くスペースが無くて、文字通り泣く泣く手放したことがある人間には共感してもらえるはずだ。

　この作品は、そんな本に取り付かれた人間の物語。

古本好きにはたまらない内容なのかと思いきや当初の思惑からは逸れてしまったが、なかなか興味深い内容だった。『書物狩人』とは世間に出れば大事になりかねない秘密をはらんだ本を、合法非合法問わず、あらゆる手段を用いて入手する本の世界の究極的存在なのだそうである。だから、只の本好き、本の虫などではなく、時には命を危険に晒すこともあったりするのだ。というわけで、ここに描かれる本の話は例えばジョン・ダニング「死の蔵書」で披露される古本の書誌学的な内容とは少し違ってくる。ここには、スティーヴン・キング「呪われた町」の初版本がいくらになるかなんて話は出てこない。本書の中に登場する稀覯本をめぐるミステリーで暴かれるのは、いわゆる歴史の暗部というやつだ。誰もが知っている歴史の常識が快く、豪快に覆されてしまう。こういうの大好き。高橋克彦「総門谷」や「竜の柩」もそうだったが、 こういった歴史の新解釈というのが、ぼくは殊更好きなのである。そこには伝奇的な匂いも感じられる。だから、内容的には本書はあの「インディ・ジョーンズの冒険」と同系色なのである。ここに紹介される四つの物語には、それぞれ一冊の本が登場する。一応ミステリなので詳細は書かないでおくが、みなとても興味深い。作者のあとがきによれば『物語を構成する要素はほとんどが事実』だということで、う〜ん、まだまだこんなに知らない事があったのかと驚くばかりだった。不満もあるが、次がでれば、また読んでしまうと思う。
