この著者は登場人物、一人一人に対しての背景を書くので物語に入り込みやすい。
今回は余計に主人公（？）の過去については心締め付けられるものがあり、上下巻一気読みしてしまいました。
ネタバレを書いてしまいそうなので率直に書かせていただきます。
すごいっ！すごすぎる・・・。ミステリィとしても人間模様としてもどちらの観点から見てもよくできてる作品だなと感じました。
是非一読あれ。最近のメフィスト賞受賞作家では一番じゃないかな。

同じ大学に通う、孤塚と月子のカップル、孤塚とルームシェアしている恭司、同じ研究室の同級生浅葱らの周囲に起こる事件を描いたミステリー長編です。
メフィスト賞を受賞したデビュー作「冷たい校舎の時は止まる」は、高校生八人の学校生活、プライベートの両面から、周囲に認識されているステレオタイプな高校生像と、実際には傷ついたり、臆病だったりする一人一人を内と外から描いて人物描写を立体的にした作品でしたが、本作品は、その立体性をさらに徹底しているのが印象的です。
特に秀才肌の主人公孤塚に対して、天才肌として描かれる浅葱が気に掛かります。
例えば、難解な曲を弾きこなす天才ピアニストの努力というのは、演奏を聴いている素人には解りづらいし、解ってしまったらその演奏は失敗だと思いますが、この長編ミステリーで天才を演じる浅葱はどうなのでしょうか。工学の分野で陽の当たる道を突き進む天才に隠された影が気になりつつ、上巻を読み終えました。

前作「冷たい校舎の時は止まる」よりは１冊少ない上下巻発行。
大学に通う月子・弧塚・浅葱。秀才といわれてきた弧塚と浅葱が挑んだ論文コンクール。最優秀はどちらかの手に渡ると思われていたが、なんと選ばれたのは「i（アイ）」という謎の人物。
「i」の正体を突き止めるうち、浅葱は「ｉ」が昔生き別れた兄の「藍」だと知る。
そして兄に会うために始まった残酷で悲しい殺人ゲーム。
浅葱は兄に会うことが出来るのか。

とても繊細に描かれています。
ただ、上巻で飽き始めてしまうかもしれません。色々な人が出てくるし、この作品でも過去と現実を行ったり来たりします。
辻村先生だなぁ･･･と思わせる箇所も多々ありますが、やはり注目すべきは浅葱君の過去。
心理的描写がとても丁寧なので読んでてつい感情移入してしまいます。
下巻では驚くべき事実と涙を誘うシーンが盛り込まれています。
ただの殺人劇ではない、悲しい恋愛物語を是非読んでください！！
