「姑獲鳥の夏」を読んだときに一番感心したのが、この人の作品には傍若無人な探偵・榎木津や、鬱を抱えた小心な関口が登場するわけですが、このアクの強いキャラ設定が、小説に彩りを添えるためにではなくて、作品の成り立ちになくてはならないものとなっている、ということでした。
そういう意味でこの作品は、一読して最初の作品に還ったと思ったのです。関口の壊れかたは一層進んでいるのですが。

前作を読んで京極堂はどこへ行くんだ、と不安に思っていた人には、やっぱり鮮やかに憑き物落しをしてくれなくては、とすっきりする読後感です。

反面、こんなにすっきりしていいのか？という気もします。マンネリを通すことで人気を維持しているシリーズ作品は他にいくらもあるのに、変わってほしくな!い、でも意表をついてほしい、読者とはわがままなものです。謎も過去の作品に較べると、ちょっとわかりやすかったかな。

なんとなくトリック？はわかってしまうのですが、
その後読んでいくとああ、と思わされます。
読後は、余韻が素敵に残りました。
美しい日本語と、京極堂の語りは変わらず、真実を明らかに。
でも、かなしいですね。

駄目だという評価が多いが、それは今までのシリーズと比較するからだろう。
今までと比べてと考えるのもアリかとは思うが
そういう先入観を持ってこの作品を読むのは余りに勿体ない。

今までの話を一度頭からとっぱらって、0にして読んでみて欲しい。
少なくとも私は泣いた。
余りにも切なくて悲しくて、そして遣る瀬ない。
これはミステリであって、推理小説では無い。
そこだけは念頭に置いて読んで欲しい。
