これまでにも幾度か森氏の本を読んだ。
もちろん、森氏の作品を非常に気に入っていたためであるが、
この短編集は私の頭の中にある森氏の枠を軽く飛び越えてしまった。

テンポ良く読める作品の数々。
独特の言い回し。
そして、ついニヤリとしてしまうラスト。

まさに森氏のテイストをふんだんに盛り込んだフルコースである。

これを読まずして森氏の作品は語れない。

文章によってしか作れないメカ。
森氏の短編にはそんな印象を与えるものがあります。
熟練工の手になるこの精密機械は、きっと、今の自分では感知不能な部分のネジ一つひとつまできっちり締められている……。読めばきっとそんな畏怖を感じるはず。
絵も音もない文章でしかできない、そしてだからこそ有意な技巧。
それを森氏は見せてくれます。

そして、その対極にあるはずなのに、しかし同時に実現し得ている、豊かな詩的世界観。
ポエジィに読者はまどろみ、メランコリィのうちに何かが消去され、やがて覚醒してディスカバリィの時が訪れる…。

この短編集は、森氏の小説の入門編として最適です。
（私のお気に入りは『キシマ先生の静かな生活』）

1997年リリース。森博嗣第一短編集。

短編集は書き手のこれから試みたいと思っている世界のラボラトリーの要素を秘めている。森博嗣の場合はその傾向が特に顕著に感じられる、というか試技実験と彼の持つファクターが一挙に体感できる。読んで最初に感じたこと、それは森博嗣とは実は小鳥遊練無である、というものだった。根本的な性格は小鳥遊練無なのである。彼が短編集を書いていると考えるとこの第一短編集のイメージが容易に構築できるのでは、と思う。（●＾o＾●）

いずれも傑作ぞろいだが僕が一番気に入ったのは『やさしい恋人へ僕から』である。ここに登場する『スバル氏』はおそらくは奥様のささきすばる氏のことだろう。氏は第二短編集『地球儀のスライス』では挿し絵も担当されている。それ以外にもS&Mシリーズの『誰もいなくなった』の最後の部分など実に見事で一人ニヤニヤしてしまう・・・・。オススメの傑作である。
