京極堂シリーズ第２弾。

シリーズ第１弾『姑獲鳥の夏』で表された登場人物それぞれのキャラクターが、
この作品でより濃くなり、固まっていく感じなので、やはり本書を読む前には
『姑獲鳥の夏』は読んでおきたい（もちろん、本書を独立して読んでも十分に楽しめる）。

このシリーズ（というか京極夏彦氏）は、本当に多様な分野を扱ったストーリーを描く。
作者自身はどういう意図でこのシリーズを書いているのかわからないけれど、
個人的にはこのシリーズは啓蒙の書だと思っている。
つまらん常識を覆す、という意味で。

特に本書は、（メインテーマとは少しズレるけれど）一般的な「犯罪者に対するイメージ」
を覆そうとする作者の意図がよく見て取れる。そういう意味で、できる限り多くの人が本書を読んで欲しいなあと思う。
評者は、テレビのコメンテーターやなんかが犯罪者を異常者扱いするのを観て、さらにそれらを無批判に受け入れる人間をみて、毎度ムカついているタイプなので、同じような方は本書に共感できるところが多いはずであるし。

評者は推理小説が好き、というわけではないので、本書のトリックや推理が推理小説として
成功しているかどうかはわからない（この点、他のレビューでは良い風に評価していないものもあるようだ）。
ただ、ストーリーの奇抜さ、それに伴ってついてくる知識、ボリュームがあるのに一文の無駄も無い構成etc...秀作が多いこのシリーズの中でも、本書の「面白さレベル」は群を抜いていると思われる。
個人的にはシリーズ最高の出来。

なぜ商品の評価を「星５つ」までにしかできないのだろう・・・残念。

　日本推理作家協会賞を受賞し、このミステリーがすごい！でも話題となった本書の内容については今更語ることはない。語るとしたらやはり装丁のことだろう。

『愛蔵版　姑獲鳥の夏』と同様、そこここに魍魎の絵があしらってあり、更に今度は『百鬼夜行　陰』収録の『小袖の手』の豆本が応募者全員サービス。愛蔵版だけでなく豆本まで自装という辺り、著者の装丁家としてのこだわりが随所に見られる。

　しかし、京極夏彦といえば中高生の読者も多いというのにそれを全く無視した値段と、部数が少なく手に入りにくいのは良くない。

読み終えると世界が潰れたような気分に陥った。まだ作品の余韻の中に浸かっていたい、そう思わせられた。妖しく魅力的な舞台設定と個性的な 登場人物達、幻想的で不安定な印象を与えられた章と章の間にある人物描写は 最後まで伏線の補強のために主格をぼかされていた。 この作品のプロットを是非とも視てみたいものだ、非常に論理的に組み合わせた 話の構成だった。物語の進み方も作品の過去から未来ではなく、読者から作品へと自然と近付けさせられる。本は分厚いけど長さを感じない良い作品だった。
