著者紹介

本名、治。1928年11月3日、大阪府豊中市生まれ。大阪大学医学専門部卒業。医学博士。1946年『マァチャンの日記帳』でデビュー。1947年「新宝島」が大ヒットする。以来、日本のストーリー漫画の確立に尽くす。また、アニメーションの世界でも、大きな業績を残す。
代表作に『鉄腕アトム』をはじめ『リボンの騎士』『火の鳥』『ジャングル大帝』『ブラック・ジャック』『ブッダ』『アドルフに告ぐ』等がある。講談社、小学館、文芸春秋、日本漫画家協会等の各賞を受賞。漫画集団員、日本漫画家協会理事、日本アニメーション協会会長、日本ペンクラブ会員、日本SF作家クラブ会員等を歴任。1989年2月9日没。

　子供の頃、父にこの本を買って貰った。十数回は、繰り返して読んだ。
　後に知ったことだが、マハーカッサパとカッサパ兄弟の誤認同一視など幾ヶ所か間違いがあるものの、西洋人の研究者が書いた書籍に見られる様な、仏教に対するやや自虐的な捉え方（仏教は諦観が主題であるという様な認識）と異なり、生きることの難しさと困難な生への真摯な態度はその後の小生の生き方に大きく影響している。
　手塚治虫の代表作の一つだと思うが、最後のほうでは筆者の病気のためか内容がやや尻すぼみしてしまったのが残念。それでも、筆者の創作なのかジャータカからの引用なのかは知らないが、幾つもの挿話（タッタやヤタラの物語など）は興味深くそして重い。読む方が、その心算でないとくたびれてしまうほどボリューム感のある著作である。

私は仏教徒ではないですが、このブッダを読んで、感動しました。
貴族の王子でありながら、人々の精神を平穏にしたい、民衆の苦労を助けたいという決意をしたゴウタマ・シッダールタ。
インドで一番貧民、病人の多い場所へ行き、皮膚病の患者の体を１週間なめつづけて、ついに完治させます。

彼を狙うものも、彼の行いをみて、恥ずかしくなり、戦いを止めます。

民衆を救うため、妻と子を捨てましたが、もっと大きなものを救いました。
お経や、お説教を聴くより、よっぽどこの本の法が、仏教の本質がわかります。

人に薦められてこの本を読みました。
私には難しいことはわかりません。宗教や信念、生きるということは。考えたことはありますが、どこかで難しく考えてはいけないことだという気持ちがありました。
ブッダはそういう意味では、わかりやすく全てを理解できたわけではないにしても、最後まで面白く読むことができました。
私がこの本を読んで一番大きく感じたのは、人間が人間という存在を大きく思っているほど地球上の生命の中では大きい存在じゃないってことです。すべて生命の価値なんてものは一緒で、虫も木も草も同じだということ。
少しでもそう考えられると、物を大事にしたり草木を無理に汚したり虫を殺したりしなくなるのだなぁ。と思いました。
