著者紹介

本名、治。1928年11月3日、大阪府豊中市生まれ。大阪大学医学専門部卒業。医学博士。1946年『マァチャンの日記帳』でデビュー。1947年「新宝島」が大ヒットする。以来、日本のストーリー漫画の確立に尽くす。また、アニメーションの世界でも、大きな業績を残す。
代表作に『鉄腕アトム』をはじめ『リボンの騎士』『火の鳥』『ジャングル大帝』『ブラック・ジャック』『ブッダ』『アドルフに告ぐ』等がある。講談社、小学館、文芸春秋、日本漫画家協会等の各賞を受賞。漫画集団員、日本漫画家協会理事、日本アニメーション協会会長、日本ペンクラブ会員、日本SF作家クラブ会員等を歴任。1989年2月9日没。

　鉄腕アトムの多くのエピソードの中でも『地上最大のロボット』は、当然のように「心」を持つと信じられてきたアトムでなく、善悪を知らない高性能ロボットがいかにそれを身につけ「人」として成長し、「人」として死にうるかを描いている。　
　つまり、アシモフが提唱した有名なロボット三原則のように単純な規則からも「心」は生まれうると。　

　まず、高性能ロボットがロボット三原則を運用する時に、併せて人間社会の善悪判断を学習していくというシステム設計は効率側面から至極当然であること。　そして、人間社会の善悪判断を学習をするためには周囲からの毀誉褒貶に敏感に反応する判断装置が必要であること。　この作品ではプルートーもアトムも繰り返し毀誉褒貶に晒され、それぞれに大きなショックを受けている。　ウランからワッペンをもらうプルートー、100万馬力を得て人間から「化けもの」と陰口を囁かれるアトム、ひとつひとつの場面が読む人間の「心」を鋭く突き刺し、その瞬間自分の内部で起こったと同じ現象がロボットの回路にも発生していることが痛いほど解る。　

　この主題は古くは石森章太郎『人造人間キカイダー』によって再び奏でられ、少女マンガの清水玲子『メタルと花嫁』、近年では神山健司『攻殻機動隊stand alone complex』等でも変奏されたが、ここまでシンプルに、単純規則から心の獲得までを追った物語はなかろう。　複雑系の研究が始まってすらいない時代に、ご都合主義でなく、丹念にこれを描きえたことは、思想として驚異的だ。
