　ヨーロッパ世界で現在につながる文化の基盤が築かれたのは、１２世紀。その端緒は、ギリシャ・ローマの古典を受け継いだアラビア世界からの文化の輸入にあった。
　アラビアからの文化はどのような経路もたらされ、どんな人物によって担われ、どんな種類のものがあったのか。当時の貴重な図版等を含む。
　わかりやすく、興味を引く語り口。中世暗黒ヨーロッパに、いきなり花開くルネサンスという図式がいまひとつ信じられなかったが、この本のおかげで歴史の連続性についてあらためて信じることができる。

この本に書いてあることは歴史学者の間では常識である。しかし９．１１以降イスラーム＝暴力主義、という図式をアメリカがプロパガンダしたために、世界中のイスラームが迷惑している。アラブ文明がいかにとてつもない影響力で以って現在の西洋文明の根本を築いたか、という事実をアメリカは忘れてしまったかのように見える。ガレノスの光学、アリストテレスの科学的手法、そういったギリシァ世界の遺産は、すべてアラブ人が一旦アラブ語に落として「保存」し、ふたたび東西の交流の中で西洋にフィードバックすることによって西洋文明開化の基礎を作り上げたという過程がわかりやすく説明されている。この本を読めば、世界史の中心は決してヨーロッパ、アメリカにあるのではなく、アジアにもっと焦点があたるべきなのだという真実に気づくだろう。

本書を紐解くと、語り口調であったため驚いたが、これは市民セミナーでの講義をもとにした本であった。
古代ギリシアからローマ帝国へ、そして中世ヨーロッパに入りルネサンスへ、近代へ、という直線的流れに一石を投じたのが、
本書の論ずる12世紀ルネサンスという概念である。当時、実はあまり学問や技術が進んでいなかったヨーロッパが、
古代ギリシアの遺産を取り入れながらカリフたちの庇護のもと素晴らしい発展を遂げていたアラビアの学芸に接し、
翻訳活動を通じて12世紀ルネサンスを展開していったのである。その様子を、主に理系書籍の翻訳活動を紹介しつつ追った好著。
第一講から第七講まで7つの講義が収録され、著者の個人的な研究動機から文学についてまで幅広く解説される。
なぜこの時期にルネサンスがおこったのか、翻訳などがどこで誰によりなされたのか、キリスト教世界とイスラム圏の交流はどうか、
など明確な問題意識の下に論じられている。主にスペインにおける両文化圏の交流、コーラン翻訳に端を発する比較的正しいイスラム理解、
自然を全て神の摂理に帰結させるのではなく合理的説明を試み、結果かえって神への理解を深めようという姿勢、
そもそもアラビアで学芸が栄えていた理由、など多くの非常に興味深いトピックが扱われており、大変面白く読めた。
一般向けセミナーを基にしているだけあってわかりやすく、膨大な固有名詞に圧倒されはするものの、それは理解を妨げるものではない。
数多くの中世人たちが、アラビア語やギリシア語などをみっちり学び、語派の異なる言語の間で苦労しつつ工夫しながら活動したことがわかる。
随所に地図や写本の写真も掲載されている。当時作られた翻訳書の表、索引つき。
