1930年、中国大連生まれ。京都大学文学部卒業。文学博士。京都教育大学助教授、東北大学教養部・奈良女子大学文学部・東北大学文学部各教授を経て東北大学名誉教授。主著に『三体詩』『宋詞』『宋詞研究』『李いく』『陸游』『蘇州・杭州物語』『中国文人論』『中国の名句・名言』『漢詩の名句・名吟』『漢詩と日本人』、学術文庫に『唐詩』がある。

本書は唐~宋代の科挙を具体例を踏まえつつ解説している。
唐宋の科挙官僚たちは、まずいかなる試験を受験したのか。
現代の我々も一度は試験地獄を経験するだろう。
その意味で科挙は興味深い。
科挙に合格して官僚となった人物たちの人生も時代を映す鏡であって面白い。
しかし、科挙に落第する人物たちにも興味を引かれるのは、
試験というものの厳しさを知る我々なら当然かもしれない。
その中でも晩唐の温庭インは、破天荒で驚かれるだろう。
科挙関連の本は多いが、入門的なものとしては世界史リブレットのものがよい。
清代の話に関しては宮崎市定先生の『科挙』がよいだろう。
