著者紹介

1933年神奈川県生まれ。東京大学大学院人文科学研究科中国哲学専門課程博士課程修了。山口大学人文学部教授、京都大学文学部教授を経て、現在愛知大学現代中国学部教授、山口大学・京都大学名誉教授。文学博士。主著に『韓非子』『中国古代思想史における自然認識』等がある。

荀子は戦国時代最後の儒家として、諸子の思想を統合しました。
その意味では、中国におけるアリストテレス的立場にあると言ってよいと思います。
宋代に朱熹が孟子を正統としたときから、荀子は長らく異端と目され、
弟子に法家の韓非や李斯がいることからか法家と分類されることまでありましたが、
荀子は孔子を聖人と崇め、政治思想は礼治を実質とした徳治主義であり、
その意味で紛れもない儒家の思想家であると言えます。
日本では性悪説を唱えたと言う理解だけで、あまり人気がないように思いますが、
荀子は、それだけに留めてしまうにはあまりに惜しい、大思想家であります。

この本は、「荀子」の訳注ではなく、荀子の伝記・思想・歴史的意義を詳しく解説したものです。
体系的にかなりしっかりと解説してあるため、入門書として好適と思われます。
荀子の思想に興味を持った方は、まずこの本から読んでみてはいかがでしょう。

研究者による、荀子の講義テキスト、といった感じの内容。ボリュームあり。
普段、「性悪説」のひとこと以上に理解されない荀子について、ちょっと気合を入れて調べてみようと思うならばお勧めします。

　学者らしく、荀子を論じているが、読むのに半年近くかかった。理由は浮世離れした学者の本って感じが強い。気になったのは、‘おわりに‘で‘中国古典思想を、現代社会の個々の問題に恣意的にあてはめて、舌触り良く解説する向きもあるようだが、こんなのは非歴史的な短絡にすぎぬし、古典をとりあげることの必然性が欠けている。‘自分は安岡正篤氏の本で古典を楽しく社会的に学んでいるので、反感を感じました。荀子の生涯や思想を様々な引用をして解説してますが、本物の荀子を読んで、荀子を勉強したくて読むには、違った意味で幼稚さを感じるのではないかと思います。
　学者は現実感が乏しくて読んでいて時々うんざりしますがこれもちょっと勘弁して欲しい一冊ですね。
