『弁明』『クリトン』は他に岩波文庫・新潮文庫・角川文庫で読んだが、この講談社学術文庫が日本語としては最も美しい翻訳になっていると思う。『弁明』と『クリトン』の組合せはありきたりだが、加えてクセノフォンの『弁明』も付いている。作品解説も近年のソクラテス研究の成果を踏まえて書かれており、他の文庫とは一線を画する。内容充実の、最もおすすめの『弁明』本である。

ヴラストスによってソクラテス研究が面白くなったと言われます。（ヴラストスとは現代の代表的なギリシャ哲学史研究家です。）その面白くなった研究成果を踏まえた新訳です。もちろん訳注も充実しています。これまでの翻訳を読まれた方もこの訳は一読（再読）の価値あり。
クセノフォンの『弁明』や解説など付録も盛りだくさん。絶対お勧めの一冊です。

ソクラテスといえば、昔のギリシャの哲学者（前469-前339)で、
奥さんは悪妻で、
裁判で死刑を言い渡されたが
「悪法も法である」といって脱獄できるのにそれをせず、
潔く死刑になった人である。

筆者にはこれくらいの知識しかなかったが、
呉智英氏の「犬儒派だもの」を読んでいて、なんとなく気になって手にとってみた。

さて、本書はソクラテスの刑死後、弟子のプラトンが書いたものである。
「ソクラテスの弁明」はアテナイ市民に自己の無実を訴えた演説。
「クリトン」は、脱獄を勧めにきた親友クリトンとの対話である。
他に参考として、クセノポンが記した「ソクラテスの弁明」も付せられている。

ソクラテスを告訴したのはメレトスという劇作家だそうだ。
ソクラテスの死刑はアテナイの市民の投票で決まった。
しかしなぜ、ソクラテスが死刑になるほど市民に憎まれていたのかは
この弁明からは、皆目わからない。

訴因は「ギリシャの神々を信じず他の神を奉じて若者たちの心を惑わせている」というもの。
さすれば、宗教裁判か、というとそういう信仰的なものではなく、
あくまで論理的な正邪、善悪でもって、弁論はなりたっている。

弁明を読んでいていちばん興味深かったのは、
神や真理や正義についての考えかたが、とても日本的である点。

キリスト教的唯一神の世界では信仰がすべての根源にあって、
そこは理屈ではないから信者でない者にはついていけないところがある。
しかしソクラテスは、唯一神ではなく人間や人間の作った法に
真や善や美の根拠を求めている。
ここが日本人の心性にフィットする。

「クリトン」で脱獄を拒否し、刑死を選択するソクラテスの理屈は、
日本人にもよくわかる。
古代ギリシャ人と日本人には何がしか共通点があるのかも知れない。
少し「ギリシャ哲学」といわれるものにあたってみたいと思った。
