歴史の学術書は、基本的に、その分野の知識がないと読めない。
読んでいてつまらない。それが当然だ。
しかし、本書は、読ませる。「桂離宮」なんか知らなくても読める。
こんな本はなかなか無い。

私は小谷野氏「評論家入門」の推薦にしたがって読んだが、
氏も言う、学術的な水準は一向に落とさずに、
商用（ジャーナリズム）にも応えている、という意味が分かった。

京都にある桂離宮。その建築の美しさは戦前来日したブルーノ・タウトによって見いだされ、単純簡素を重んじる日本文化を代表する建築として、以後、多くの文化人に支持され、日本建築の頂点に君臨している。

本書では、以上のような桂離宮観を一つの神話と見、戦前の桂離宮をめぐる言説を丁寧に追うことで、その神話がどのように形成されていったのかを鮮やかに描き出している。本書によれば、当時の日本のモダニストによってタウトの発言が誘導され、過度に強調され、日本文化論の文脈に置き換えることで神話が形成されていったのだという。

著者は近年では「パンツが見える」「愛の空間」など、キワモノのテーマを学術的に論じていくことで有名だが、それ以前に本書で見せていた、神話形成の背景にある政治力学を見事に暴いてみせる力量は素晴らしい。なるほど、この実力があるからこそ猥雑なテーマを扱うこともできるのか、と妙に納得させられた。ともあれ、ミステリのような楽しみを存分に味わえる一冊だ。

なお、文庫版のあとがきも非常に面白い。普通のあとがきからは明らかに逸脱しているのだが、学問とは何かということについて、考えさせられてしまう。

桂離宮を巡るイメージや言説の拘束性の変遷について
丁寧な文献考証で明快に論じられている。
桂離宮はひとつの題材であって、ここで論じられている
ことは、通念やイメージが流布することについての
優れた考察である。
小難しく言えば「事実認識の価値拘束性」や「歴史の
仮構性」フーコー的「権力」の問題ということになろ
うけど、要はいかにわれわれが物を見る眼が不自由で
歪んでいるか、そのことにいかに自覚的になれるか、
実際の事例をとおして考証しているということだ。
概念的な議論でなく、実際桂離宮を巡る神話を解体して
みせることで、優れて分かりやすい論考になっている。
そういう意味では、建築だけにかかわらず、何かを語る
ものはかならず読んでおくべき必読書でしょう。
