古代ギリシャの悲劇作家ソフォクレスの『オイディプース王』は古典ギリシャ文学の最高峰であると同時に、完璧な作品である。哲学者ヘーゲルもこの作品をこよなく愛し、心理学者フロイトも自説に「エディップス・コンプレックス」なる用語を導入するなど、後世への影響も甚大である。本書は円熟したギリシャ語の素養を駆使してこのテキストを丹念に読み解く。著者は特に母であり、妻でもあるイオカステと当時のギリシャ悲劇の上演において重要な役割を果たした合唱隊に注目している。スフィンクスの謎かけ、父親殺し、母子相姦、オイディブース王の悲劇的末路はすべて神の宣託の成就による。『オイディプース王』に現れる神の観念は、われわれに親しい人間臭いオリンポスの神々とは違って、シナイ山でモーセに十戒を授ける「怒れる神」に近い。オリエントの神観念にかなり影響を受けているのだろう。『オイディプース王』原典の一つの読み方として参考になる。
