「憑く」という語の本来の意味は、事物としてのものにもともと内在する精霊や、異界の神霊などが、別の事物としてのものに乗り移ることを意味していた。本書は、こうした憑依現象を手懸りにして、狐憑き、犬神憑き、山姥、式神、護法、付喪神など、人間のもつ邪悪な精神領域へと踏み込み、憑依という宗教現象の概念と行為の体系を介して、日本人の闇の歴史の中にうごめく情念の世界を明らかにした好著。


著者紹介

1947年東京都生まれ。埼玉大学教養学部卒業。東京都立大学大学院博士課程修了。現在、大阪大学文学部助教授。専攻は文化人類学・民俗学。著書は『異人論』『悪霊論』『神々の精神史』『説話の宇宙』『神隠し』『日本の呪い』『鬼がつくった国・日本』（共著）など多数。

幅広い日本の「憑霊」というものについて、表面的な分析ではなく周到な実地調査の末、記された本である。
現代のいざなぎ流の実態など、外部の者にはなかなか窺い知ることのできない地域性の濃い部分もあり、非常におもしろい。
図画も多く、文章も論文という体裁ながら専門用語を多用しておらず平易で読みやすい。
「陰陽師」「妖怪」「呪詛」「いざなぎ流」これらどれか一つにでも少なからず興味をお持ちの方は一読する価値が充分にあると思う。

　読者の特別な知識を前提せずに、「憑きもの」にかんする私たち日本人の認識体系を紹介する筆者の手際には感銘を受けました。また、教科書的な分類紹介におわらない、知的好奇心に満ちあふれた筆の運びもすばらしい。軽薄な「憑きもの妖怪ガイド」とは次元の異なる、まさに「読ませる」本でした。われわれの社会の底辺に横たわる「構造」を、社会経済的システムとしてのみ引き出す（西洋風の構造主義）のではなく、また、個人的な深層意識に根を求める（１９世紀的精神分析）わけでもない。言ってみれば、「社会的な深層意識構造」とでもいうべきものを探求する学問としてこの分野はある。そしてこの分野は、共通のルールを遺伝子のうちに含み込んでいる（共通の「呪いが効く」心性のうちに生きている）自国人にしかできない研究なのではないでしょうか。われわれの現代社会を読み解く鍵になる可能性の高い学問体系への入門書として、有意義だと感じました。

　この本は引用も多く著者自身の主張も分かりやすい。憑きものに関して気になる人は読んでみるととても良い。なにせ著者の憑きもの定義が広いためこの中には狐から護法、妖怪まで幅広く扱われている。内容を挙げてみるならば、いざなぎ流（陰陽道）の呪詛や式神、護法、山姥、熊野、付く喪神等がある。引用も豊富で、内容も学術的な部分も多いがそれ系の専門でない人が読んでも十分に分かりやすい。もしも、難点を挙げるとするならば、幅広いだけあって項目毎に少し物足りない感じがすることである。しかし、このような種の本が文庫で読めることは非常に嬉しい。
