　個人としてはまことに知的、理性的、道徳的な人でさえも、一度群集が形成され、そこに
巻き込まれるや否や、その性質とはおよそ対照的な暴力性や非合理性を表現するに至る。
――そんな群集心理に鋭い筆致で切り込む1895年の画期的著書。
　二度の大戦を経験した20世紀に先立って、「群衆の時代」へと向けられた知識人の危機感を
先取りした一冊、とも読める。
　ここでは詳しくは書かぬが、個人と集団の心理を対象にしたことを理由にしばしば
比較される、同時代の社会学者エミール・デュルケームおよびガブリエル・タルドの議論も
併せて押さえておくと、やはり興味深さは格段に増す。
　また、現代において彼の名が論じられるのはもっぱら社会科学のフィールドにおいてのこと。
しかし、そもそもル・ボンは医学や人類学の知識を下敷きとした人物。そうした点から彼の
議論に光を当てた、菅野賢治『ドレフュス事件のなかの科学』は快作。

断言とは……「議論することの拒否」を意味する　合理的にくどくど説明しないで短い言葉でズバッと言えば言うほどますます威厳を持つ
反復とは……論証も何もされていないその非合理的な断言を何度も何度も繰り返し唱えて聞いている人間の頭の中の「既成事実」にしてしまえ
感染とは……さらにそれを他のさまざまな人間に思い切り宣伝し宣伝させることによって内容のない形だけの「世論」にしてしまえ

群集心理学の祖であるルボンは、フランス革命後のヨーロッパで、君主の発言や政治的伝統の実質的意義がますます低下し、非理性的で破壊的な群衆の勢力が優勢になってしまったことに恐怖をおぼえました。しかしルボンがこの大きな問題を解決するために案出した方法は、群衆そのものを変革することではなく、群衆を統治する指導者に対して、どうすれば群衆に暗示をかけ、その心理を操作することができるかを教えることでした。群衆を操作する手段としてルボンは断言・反復・感染の三つを挙げました。もし指導者が十分な威厳と手腕を備えているならば、群衆は彼のもとに従い、問題などまったく発生しないだろうというのがルボンの主張でした。
けれどもルボンは、指導者による群衆の操作方法に関しては正確な分析をしたものの、その指導者が分別をわきまえた偉大な人物であるとはかぎらず、無能だったりただのデマゴーグにすぎなかったりするかもしれないという重大な危険性に関しては何にも考えていなかったのです。そのためにヒトラー、ムッソリーニという大犯罪者によって、ルボンによる群衆の操作方法が実践に移される結果になってしまったのでした。
（というか実は老年のルボンはムッソリーニのファシズムに心酔しきっており、彼自身が野蛮な群衆の一員になってしまっていた。しかもこの本の内容自体かなり反復が多く、露骨な人種差別論さえ展開してくるので、すべてを鵜呑みにしないよう警戒しながら読むことが必要）
