レオナルドの生涯を追いかけながら、その時々で残した作品について論じていく著作。
単なる天才に対する賞賛でもなく、興味本位でその生涯を綴ったものでもない。
論点となりそうなところはほぼ全て網羅されていると言ってよい。

男女、性についての考え方、生命や自然への興味、本人の同性愛的嗜好、
この辺りは下手をすると興味本位的な書き方になってしまうところだが、
きっちり学問的に論じられており、改めてレオナルドについて知りうるところである。

またこの時代を支配した“ネオ・プラトニスム”という哲学について、
作品や時代背景をもとに詳細に論考を重ねておられる。
ルネサンス期に興味のある方はぜひチェックしておくべきだろう。

後半にはモナ・リザについても書かれているが、
本書ではそのモデルについて通説に一石を投じているのが特徴である。
さて、本当のところはどうなのか？
考えの幅を広げる意味で面白いと感じた。

ミケランジェロとの対比についての論考も興味深く、
その考え方、作風の違い、制作の過程まで踏み込んでいることで、
かつて彼らの中に緊張感のあるやり取りがあったことを知ることができる。
本書を参考文献として挙げている書物が多くあることを考えると、
レオナルド、ルネサンスを語る上で外せない一冊ではなかろうか。

　万能の天才と呼ばれるレオナルド・ダ・ヴィンチについて、その本質を画家としての立場に見た上で、彼が認識していた世界とその生涯を解き明かす。
　「三王礼拝」の意匠から読み取られるレオナルドの持つ世界観が、「岩窟の聖母」や「聖アンナと聖母子」を経て、いわゆる「モナ・リザ」と「聖ヨハネ」に向かってどう結実していくのかが、残された手記やデッサンに関わる考察を交えて、検証されている。
　１５、１６世紀の政治情勢を背景に、ミケランジェロをはじめとする他の芸術家とのかかわり、また古代ローマ哲学の系譜の中に、レオナルド・ダ・ヴィンチの思想と生き方が示される。

理想が導くままに、彼は行く現実へ更なる現実の深みへ、ロマン主義者のあざけるように現実は単なる平板ではなかった。モナリザの背景の風景画にそれはしめされている。山水画技法の東洋を越えて、禅僧すら知らなかった深みへと。それは、フィレンツェでもローマでもミラノでもなくどこでもない“ここ”にあった。
