【渡辺昇一】
1930年山形県生まれ。1953年上智大学卒業。現在、上智大学教授。主著に『英文法史』『知的生活の方法』『「人間らしさ」の構造』など。

【下谷和幸】
1947年石川県生まれ。上智大学卒。現在東邦大学助教授。主著に『マニエリスム芸術の世界』。

It is a very famous book considering life from a philosophical point of view in the Western countries. It recommends for us to acquire not only knowledge but also morality.

Unexpectedly the title of Chapter 1 is "The Physical Basis." It says that a strong body is important to spend intellectual life. But for a strong body as the container of the spirit, we should not spend our intellectual life.

いろんな立場の人への手紙という体裁で書かれている、知的生活の箴言のような本。時代にそぐわない章もある(7,8章)。手紙の内容同士で多少八方美人のような面もある。だがいずれも細部にすぎず、本書は「まえがき」から線をひきたくなった。全体をとおして一言一言が臓腑にずしっとくる。渡部昇一氏が入れ込んできたのも納得いく。翻訳も非常に読みやすいしありがたいことだ。時々好きなところを開いて読みかえしたくなるタイプの本だ。

含まれる議論は多様であるが、一番ひびいたのは、時間に関する忠告だ。畢竟「時間は大切」に帰着するのだが、この忠告はあたり前すぎてその含蓄を見失いがちである。ハマトンは時間の無駄の諸相を読者に示し、その意味の重さについて再考をせまる。たとえば不完全にしか修得していないものにかけた時間はすべて無駄だったのだという記述を読んだ時、私はぎょっとした。

研究対象を絞り、期限を意識して仕事するのが時間を無駄にしないコツという。このアドバイスはありふれているが、ハマトンは加えて、その制約内でどんな仕事ができるのか、できる仕事の程度や制限もあらかじめ思い描いて設定しておくのが大事という。この考えは私には新鮮に響いた。たしかに程度についての予想ももっておくと、ある仕事が終わったときに、対照物となりうるし、予想と比べて、できたのかできなかったのか、かけた時間が結局有意義だったのか無駄だったのかのかが計測しやすい、という感じはする。

最後に、これから読む人に中身の感じを伝えるべくひとつだけ引用を。

「ひとつだけ大好きな研究対象があって、それを日々楽しく、入念に愛情をもって隅々まで研究する。そう、ちょうど小さな土地を持った百姓が自分の土地を耕すように。このような生活こそ、少なくともなにかを研究する場合には、最も羨むべき知的生活です。」(p.121)

人生の中で自分の知力を最大限に生かすための、
深い考察がなされています。
全体を通して、時間を節約せよ、人生を無駄にするなという
ハマトンのメッセージが伝わってきます。

イギリスの古い時代について語った部分もあり、
全て読みやすいとは言えませんが、
それを差し引いてもおつりが来るほどの名著です。

「知的に生きる」人は必読でしょう。
できれば原著も一緒に読みたいものです。
