『徒然草』は鎌倉末期の草庵歌人兼好の随筆。全244の章段から成る。その中には、人生論あり、都鄙の珍しい逸話あり、古きよき時代をしのばせる故実への考証あり、多彩をきわめる。作品世界は兼好の心の動きのままに展開されるが、随所に鋭い批評眼が光り、みずみずしい情感が流れる。成立後しばらくは埋もれていたが近世以後、無数の読者に迎えられ、日本の代表的古典として評価される。本巻は第46段までを扱う。（全4冊）



著者紹介

1935年兵庫県生まれ。1966年東京大学大学院博士課程修了。日本中世文学専攻。お茶の水女子大学文教育学部教授。著書『方丈記・発心集（新潮日本古典集成）』、共著『方丈記・徒然草（鑑賞日本の古典）』『仏教文学の古典』など。本書のほか学術文庫に、『鴨長明』がある。

　その著作と共に、以下の書き出しはあまりにも有名。

　つれづれなるままに、日くらし、硯にむかひて、心にうつりゆくよしなごとを、そこはかとなく書きつくれば、あやしうこそものぐるほしけれ。（序段）

　敢えて一言で言うならば、本書の内容は「人間論」であろう。人間というものについて、独自の視点から様々な事例を引用しつつ論を展開し、人間の心の本質を探ろうとしており、ひたすら自己を見つめ続ける鴨長明著「方丈記」とは一線を画している。

　具体的には、財宝・子供を持つことを否定し、さらには長寿をも否定、清貧と濁富を説き、真の心の友を持つことの難しさゆえに書物を通じて遠い時代の人を友とすることを訴える。また当時では常識？かもしれないが、男尊女卑の傾向が随所に見られ、生きていく上で必要なものとして衣食住以外に「医療」を上げている点などは、長寿の否定と矛盾しているようで興味深い。

　細かい内容上の矛盾は見られるものの、人間の理想として仏道に生きることを勧め、人生の「無常」を自覚することの重要性を説いている。

　最後に、「住まい」に関して言及している箇所を引用することによって締めたいと思う。

　家居のつきづきしく、あらまほしきこそ、仮の宿りとは思へど、興あるものなれ。（第十段）

　家の作りやうは、夏をむねとすべし。冬はいかなる所にも住まる。暑きころわろき住居は、堪へがたき事なり。（第五十五段）

　ちなみに、多数出版されている中でも講談社学術文庫から出ている三木紀人による「徒然草」全訳注は、4分冊でボリューム満点だが原文・現代語訳・語釈・解説と内容的に充実しているのでお薦め。

　徒然草は日本の古典の代表作である。世界で通用するという点で判断すると　群を抜いているかもしれない。小林秀雄が　本作をモンテーニュのエセーと比較した上で　エセーより更に簡潔になっていると評価したのは　小林の日本贔屓だけではないと思う。

　そんな徒然草だけに　注釈もいくらでも出ている。徒然草の研究だけで　十分喰っていけそうな気がするのは小生だけではないかもしれない。

　そんな中で　本書は全四巻に分けて　じっくり解説してくれる。その意味では　初めて徒然草を読むには　長いが　案外良い案内になるかもしれないというのが小生の感想である。

　しかし　結局　徒然草という本は　読者を試しているような趣があることは確かだ。徒然草の　入門書であろうと　専門書であろうと　結局は　徒然草に対峙する読者が何を思い　何を汲み取るかにかかっている。小生も偉そうに言いつつも　実は　殆ど感じ取れていないと思うしかない。

　エセーもそうだが　徒然草を読むには　それなりの人生経験が必要だ。ゆっくり　自分の熟成を待つ。自分の「熟成具合」を調べるために　読んでみる。そんな　一冊かもしれない。まるでチーズやワインみたいである。
