著者紹介

1867〜1916　作家。本名金之助。江戸牛込の生まれ。東京大学英文科を卒業。1900年文部省留学生として渡英、帰国後東京大学にて「文学論」「十八世紀英文学」を講ずる。まもなく朝日新聞社に入り、以後多くの名作を残す。主著に『吾輩は猫である』『こころ』『明暗』など。

　高校で初めて『私の個人主義』とであって、それ以来とても好きになった一冊です。夏目漱石の日本人や日本社会に対する鋭い観察力は時代の垣根を越えて今なお生きています。現代日本は金と権力を過信し、それらを盾に物事を決めようとしています。これに警鐘を鳴らす漱石の先見性は大したものであります。
　現代社会に対して不満の持っている方、自分が何をすれば良いのかよくわからない方、こういう方々はこの本を是非一回読んでほしいと思います。

日本が開国の混乱から脱し、ナショナリズムから戦争への道を歩き始めようとした迷妄の時代に、個人主義こそが国家・民族主義に遙かに勝るものと喝破したその洞察には感服。「国家は大切かもしれないが、朝から晩まで国家国家とあたかも国家にとりつかれたような真似」を厳しく非難し、「国家的道徳は個人的道徳に比べるとずっと低いもの」と決めつけるくだりなどは、さすが文豪と嘆じる他はありません。タイムマシンで漱石氏を現代に招き、国会および国連の壇上で一席ぶっていただけたらどれほど多くの人が目を覚ますでしょうか。単なる講演録として文学研究者にすら軽視されている現状が大変残念でなりません。もっと広く読まれるべき本です。

仕事や人間関係に行き詰まったときにいつも読む。
もうなんにもしたくない気分なのに文章を目が追うし、なぜか勇気付けられているような気がしてくる。
長い長い苦しみと孤独の末に漱石がたどり着いた思想がこのうすい本に結実しているからだろう。
明治４４年に漱石が吐いた言葉は今も脈うっている。
