1875年兵庫県生まれ。東京帝国大学法科卒業。日本民俗学樹立の功績により、1951年文化勲章を受けた。1962年没。『遠野物語』『口承文芸史考』『雪国の春』『海南小記』など、その著作は『定本柳田國男集』に収められている。

「遠野物語」などの名著が多数ある柳田國男の妖怪論集。特筆すべきは巻末の妖怪名彙。オクリイヌやムカエイヌ、べトベトサンなど著者が日本各地で採集した妖怪が数多く挙げられている。冒頭に、妖怪博士こと井上円了の妖怪学に対抗しているかのような言葉が述べられていて、可愛い（笑）。妖怪が好きな人だけでなく、農村の人々の心性が知りたい人にもお勧めできる本である。

昭和３１年に出版されたものの文庫版。
ザシキワラシ・小豆洗い・天狗等、タイトル通り妖怪についての考察である。
書き出しのところで著者は、オバケ（化け物）と幽霊を混同する人が多いことを嘆いている。
その違いは、

・オバケは出現する場所がたいてい決まっており、避けてそこを通らなければ一生でくわさずに済ますこともできる。
対して幽霊は、足が無いという説があるにの関わらず、てくてくと向こうからやってきて、狙われるとどれだけ逃げても追いかけてくる。そんなことはオバケにはまず無いらしい。
・オバケは相手を選ばないが、幽霊は特定の人間だけに思い知らせようとする。

この二点である。

また、黄昏時はオバケに出会いやすいという。
古い日本語では黄昏のことをカハタレといい、もしくはタソガレドキと言っていたのは、「彼は誰（カハタレ）」「誰ぞ彼（タゾカレ）」が固定した形らしい（誰かわからないような者に出会う時間帯ということか）。
そのため黄昏に道を歩く人間が、互いに声を掛けるのは単なる礼儀ではなく、自分が化け物でないということを証明する儀式であったようである。

各々の妖怪について触れてある箇所ももちろんおもしろい、というかそれがメイン。
妖怪に興味がある方は是非どうぞ。

日本全国の妖怪話を集めて本格的な分析を加えたもの。
一つ一つの話そのものが面白いのだが、それに加えて著者の分析の見事さに
息を呑む事もしばしばで、知的な満足も得られる。

主軸を成している考えは、妖怪とは貶められた古い神々であるというもので、
本書の意義はそうした太古の宗教的な価値観をいささかなりと
蘇らせるところにあると言える。

僕が読んでいて最も楽しかったのは、「呼びかけに応じると背中にずしりと
黄金を背負わされる話」だ。日本全国になぜかこのバリエーションが山ほどあるらしい。
