著者紹介

1902年京都市生まれ。京都帝国大学農学部卒業。京大人文研究所員、同大教授、岐阜大学長などを歴任。1972年文化功労者に選ばれる。京都大学名誉教授、元日本山岳会会長。理学博士。主著に『生物の世界』『山岳省察』『生物社会の論理』『日本山岳研究』『私の進化論』など多数。また『今西錦司全集』（全14巻）がある。1992年6月15日没。

著名な学者である今西錦司先生の書いた本です。どくろの表紙が印象的です。ダーウィンが提唱し、その後広まった進化論の矛盾を指摘し、独自の進化論を提唱しています。当り前のように信じ込まされていた進化論における矛盾を鋭く指摘しています。とても勉強になる本でした。進化ということを考える上でも、学問というものを考える上でも考えさせられる良い本でした。一般向けにわかりやすく書かれていると思うのですが、それでも、時々、難しい記載があって、頭がついていかなくて、理解できないところはありました。ユニークな視点で書かれていると思います。

日本が世界に先駆けた数少ない科学分野である、霊長類学の開祖。個体識別をした上での観察を提唱し、数々の貴重な発見の基礎を築いた、たいへん偉い先生。進化に対する見方も独特で､残念ながらついていけないと感じる部分もある。哲学に近い。

私は生物学の専門家ではないので、本書の学問的価値はわからない。しかし、本書が非常に面白い本であるということは言える。

私にとってとりわけ印象的であったのは、欧米の進化論の、環境に対する適応としての自然淘汰の仮説に対しての今西の反論である。今西は言う。「生物に主導性を置くことが目的論になるのであったらどうして環境に主導性を置くことも目的論にならないのだろうか？」と。そして、生物・環境の両者の要請の一致に進化が現れるという。

文章もわかりやすく書かれており、生物学・進化論に興味のあるという方には是非読んでいただきたい。
