見開きで説明がまとまっており、軽く読み流すには良い書籍。最近の計算化学の変化のさわりは理解できる。（合成化学者が飛行機の片道で読破できるレベルだった。）レファレンスをまったくあげていないため、興味がわいた章も、それ以上おいかけることができない。また、Ｇａｕｓｓｉａｎの間にＧａｍｅｓｓが頻繁に出てくるため、前半、後半にまとめてほしい。Ｇａｕｓｓｉａｎに興味のある人には、結構邪魔な記載方法だった。分野外のひとが、計算化学専門の人と話をする際、違和感なく、話をフォローする基礎知識として使う本としては優秀。せめて、レファレンスくらいは載せてほしかったが。。。

著者の言うとおり、近年では実験化学者にとっても理論計算はなくてはならないものになっています。
しかし、実験するので精一杯、量子化学計算をじっくりと学ぶ時間はなかなか取れません。
そのためにブラックボックス的に計算利用しがちです。

そこで、本著の登場です。
各項目はQ&A形式で簡潔にまとめられており、
必要最低限のバックボーンはもちろん、
励起状態・遷移状態・溶媒相互作用などの実験化学と結びつきの強い計算の手法、
コツのようなものも記述されています。
計算をしたい実験化学者は手元においておきたい一冊です。

１点だけ残念なのは、GAMESSとGaussianので例示が併記されていて、
片方しか使わない人にとってはもう一方の説明がうるさいところでしょうか。
双方のユーザーに対して十分配慮されているということになるともいえますが。

Gaussianユーザーとしては満足の一冊です。星４つ

これから量子化学計算を始める人向けの解説書。
量子化学の理論の基本的な解説と、GaussianとGamessを中心としたソフトウエアの解説がある。
理論的な解説の部分では、数式をほとんど使わず、直感的に理解できるような説明が中心である。そのため、計算化学の理論の詳細を理解したい人には向かないが、実際に計算をするうえで最低限の知識は得られる。
ソフトウエアの使い方が詳しいのがこの本の最大の特徴である。ソフトウエアの入手法、実際に計算を行ううえでのコマンドまで解説している。また、反応経路の動画や分子が回転する動画をつくる方法なども解説している点は、類書にない特徴といえる。
全体的に理解しやすい言葉で書かれていて、計算化学の全くの初心者が無理なく計算を始められる良書である。
