「相手の長所を打ち砕くことこそが勝負脳が求める究極の姿であり、そのための練習は、勝負脳をますます強くするのです」。

金メダルを取ったときの北島康介選手の派手なガッツポーズの写真が帯についている。２年以上前に出版された本なのだが、オリンピック後にあちこちでちょっと話題になっているようなので、読んでみた。

著者は脳外科医で、特に脳低温療法を発見した権威として世界的に有名な存在だということだ。脳と心のメカニズムについては、まだ科学的に十分解明されていないことが多い。よって、このような趣旨で本を書こうとすると、一流の専門家であっても、どうしても証明されている科学的な事実以外の個人的な経験や仮説や意見も交えなければならなくなる。ただ、著者は専門の脳研究に関する部分では科学的に解明されたり有力だと考えられていることを最大限踏まえた上で持論を展開しているので、多少の飛躍はあるし科学の本ともいえないのだけれども、ある程度の説得力はある。

それだけに限定されているわけではないが、主に説明の対象として取り上げられているのはスポーツである。よって、例えば日々の勉強のための参考にということであるなら、同じように脳科学に基づいた説明を行っている池谷氏の本の方が向いているように思われる。ただし、特に本番での勝負に役立つ心構えという視点では、本書の方が面白い。また、脳の動きについて専門的な説明も時々あるものの、わかりやすく書かれていてそれほど難しくはない。「勝てない脳を劇的に変える！」という帯の文句ほどの効果があるかどうかは保証しかねるが、過度に期待せず割り切ってまずは読んだ上で、自分に必要だと思うところがあれば取り入れてみればよいのではないか。

平素、勝負弱いなあということで、読んでみました。

p108での、
・著者自身が、医者という科学者のはしくれでありながら、根拠の薄いマイナスイオンの効果について、さも効果ありと主張するところ
・さらに、マイナスイオンの効果はレナード(ノーベル物理学賞受賞者)が発見したと誤解するような記述になっている。(レナードは、水が大気中で微粒子になる際、小さい微粒子が、周りの空気を負に帯電させることを発見したにすぎず、世間で言われているようなマイナスイオンの効果については主張していない)

の部分が、権威主義っぽいのと、科学者としての姿勢に疑問を抱かせる点で、気に入りませんでした。この本の主題とは関係無いし、気にすまいとは思ったんですが。。。

脳科学は専門ではないので、脳のしくみは素直に興味を持って読めましたし、主題である勝負脳の部分については、勝負強い人の行動と、自分の行動と対比してみて、結構納得することが多かったので面白く読めたんですが、やっぱり上で述べたマイナスイオンの記述が、残りの全ての主張を嘘っぽくしてしまうので大変残念です。

個人的には、読み応えを感じたのは著者自身による脳低温蘇生法のところだけだった。
後は、一般人と同じテレビ番組を見て著者が感じた断片的な主観・感想ばかり。
そんな話は誰でもできることで、著者が何を言いたいのか分からず、この本を買う意味は感じられなかった。
この本は、徒然草と同じ類のエッセーなのかもしれない。
結局、この本を読んでも「勝負脳」は鍛えられない。
