歴史とあるが、ヨーロッパ人がどのように時間や自分達の住んでいる世界がどのようなものだったのかということが書いてある。古代から始まり、現代に至るまでの世界観がわかりやすく書いてある。実は歴史の現在区分である、古代、中世、近世、近代、現代といった区分の仕方は、学問的な根拠からではなく、キリスト教から発しているものだということがわかる。世界の拡大から、差別的思考が生まれ植民地支配を西洋人がおこなったということなど、西洋文明の弊害とも言うべき現象もどうして発生したのかということまでわかる。歴史というよりも西洋人の観念が良く理解できる。哲学や社会学に興味がある人でも十分面白いと思う。

本書は著者の前著『聖書 ＶＳ 世界史』の補遺である。現在行われている「世界史」にこびりついている「欧州中心主義」の残滓をランケ、マルクス、マックス・ヴェーバー等の歴史観を批判し、浮き彫りにするのが本書の狙いかと思われる。また前著で「普遍史」として紹介されたキリスト教的歴史観だけでは「欧州中心主義」の説明が不十分なため、重複する部分も多いが、メソポタミア的歴史観、ヘレニズム的歴史観が「世界史」に与えた影響が加えられている。私には、むしろ今の時代は「欧州中心主義」は相当後退し、米国、ロシア、中国、朝鮮、日本、インド、イスラーム圏等が「欧州中心主義」を換骨奪胎し、各々の「自己中心主義」を創作し、民族主義、国家主義、宗教主義を鼓舞しているのではないかと思う。そもそも今の欧州に往年の帝国主義時代ほどの力があるだろうか。むしろ残滓たる「自己中心主義」の世界的伝播こそ恐るべき弊害であり、十分に警戒すべきものであると思われる。

ヨーロッパにおいて古代から現代に至るまでに、時間に関しては、１）円のように循環、２）始点と終点の定まった直線、３）過去と未来の両方向に無限に伸びる直線、と言った風に捉え方が変わってきている。空間においても、地球が丸いと認識されていなかった時代があるのである。

時間や空間の認識が現代とは違う時代においては、当然ながらそれに見合った歴史観が涵養されるが、本書はヨーロッパにおけるその変遷を綴ったものと言えるだろう。
