特に野島講義4が面白い。日本史で大変なブームとなり、その世界では、基本的常識となった国民国家論の入り口へ導いてくれる。野島氏の立場は、日本の国民国家論の火付け役である立命館の西川長夫教授のように、国民国家を相対化して、批判するというものよりは、本書221ページに写真で紹介されているベネディクト・アンダーソンの想像の共同体に近いように思われる。国民やナショナリズムの起源をフランス革命ころにおき、小説や新聞、言語の国民概念形成に果たした役割を考えるように読者を誘う。日本の特殊性を言い募るではなく、世界史のより高い観点からみた日本の近代化の普遍的側面への視野を開いてくれる。この普遍的視野こそ、日本人が自らの過去を客観的かつ冷静に見つめ考え、そして中国や韓国にも卑屈にもならず、尊大にもならないために必要なことであると思う。最も配当ページ数は少ないようだが内容はもっとも濃く、深いのが日本史の部分であろうと思う。

この本全体を通じて、
今まで色々なところで言い尽くされてきた内容で、
全く新鮮さを感じなかった。

特に英語に関しては、
自らの文章に酔いしれているかのごとく、
ことばをこねくりまわして、
結局何が言いたいのかよく分からない。
英語専門なら、
せめてエッセーライティングの基本くらいは守って
文章を展開してもらいたい。

また、
「語学はスポーツ」などという話は、
10年前から常識化していると思われる。
それを一番阻んでいるのが、この人たちが所属する
『予備校や塾教育』であることも周知の事実であるように思われる。
「英語はまず文法」と言ってUPGRADEや文法語法の1000を持たせるような
ことをしておいて、何を今更という感じがする。

ここ数年で読んだ本の中で一番時間の無駄だと思った本でした。
これなら賛成か反対かは別にして伊藤和夫の本を読んでいる方が
文章力も説得力もあるよい文章である。
