著者紹介

1962年、米国ハワイ州ホノルル市生まれ。イェール大学哲学科卒業。専攻は言語哲学。1984年に来日。英会話学校教師として1年勤務した後、『日本語ジャーナル』の英文監修など、翻訳家として活動。そのかたわら、雑誌のコラムや連載エッセイなどを執筆。1992年より、コーネル大学日本文学科博士課程で、日本文学・記号論を研究。現在、ニューヨーク州在住。

マーク・ピーターセンの『日本人の英語』は多くの人が絶賛するところだが、本書を誰かが推薦しているのを見たことがない。しかし、名詞や冠詞に関しては、ピ氏の書と同じぐらいに啓発的だ。

Amazon.co.jpでは取り扱っていないようだが（これを記入している時点において）、図書館や書店に行って、第4章をみてみよう。英語学習の観点から言えばそれ以外のところは読まなくても損はない（面白いので、読んでも損はない）。

マーク・ピーターセン氏同様、英語のnativeでありながら、日本語で本を書き上げた。
両言語とも使えるからこそ、日英語の本質の違いを把握しているし、その比較対照は
興味深い。両言語の対照という点においては、非常に啓発的である。

しかし、この本では、「日本人英語」を柱とした英語学習法を提案している。
つまり、カタナカ英語、和製英語といった、著者曰く「ウラ英語」を使った
学習法を提案している。
「カタカナ英語の発音はRPに極めて近い」とか「日本人英語の文法は英米語に決して
劣ることがない」という、個人的には納得できない論でもって、日本人英語学習法を
提案している点は少し納得できなかった。
大体、日本人英語というのはどういうものを指して記述しているのかが曖昧なままで、
仮にカタカナ英語のようなものだとすると、それはあくまで単語レベルの英語で
あって、それが文法にはなかなか活かされないのではないのか、というのが私見で
ある。

A Kid's Review
ネイティブのような発音が出来なくても、言い回しが東洋的でも、
我々が使う「English」は「日本人英語…イングリッシュ」である。

国際社会の中で英語を使っていると、実に様々な訛りの英語が存在することに気づく。
それは本来の正しい英文法ではないかもしれない、本来の発音ではないかもしれない。
「通じる英語」「ビジネス道具としての英語」だけに縛られず、英語はもっと
「コミュニケーションツール」として活用しても良いのではないか。

この本は、日本に来てから日本語を学びだしたネイティブ本人による、日本語の本だ。
彼の「日本語」もまた「Japanese（英米なまりの日本語）」である。
言語哲学者から見た外国語としての英語・日本語論、読んで損はない。
