作者が追求する「自由」とは何か？ということが

ムーミン村の仲間達がいろいろな経験をしながら温かく教えてくれるそんな感じがしました。ムーミンってこんなに深い話だったんだって思わずびっくりしました。でも言いたいこがすっごく率直に伝わってきてわかりやすいし、すごくおもしろかったです。大きな優しさを持つスナフキン、自由を探すムーミンパパ、ニョロニョロの正体。人間が持つ自由への憧れとか、誰かの一番になりたいって思う思考、窮屈な毎日に対する疲れ、これらすべてをムーミン達が癒してくれます。これはすっごいオススメですよ○

わたしはこの本のなかで「ぞっとする話」が一番好きだ。何度よんでもどきどきするから。ちいさいホムサが草原で「やっ！」と斥候を殺したり（！）、溝のなかでじっと息を殺して身を隠しているところを読むと、何と戦っているのかわからないけど、とにかく一緒に冒険をしている気分になってどきどきする。そして私はすごくそそっかしいので、ホムサが赤ちゃんの弟を草原に置き去りにして家に帰ってしまい、弟が蛇に食べられてしまった！と両親に報告するところで、その事実にあまりにびっくりし数行を読みとばしてしまう、つぎの瞬間にはもう夜になりホムサは家出をしてしまっている。あれ？！弟はどうなったんだ！でもよーーーく読むと「弟は庭でせっせと砂を食べていました」とちょうどページとページの谷間のところににさらっと書いてある。その大事な一行をいつも読み飛ばしてしまうので、そのたびにどきどきする。でも最後にはお父さんと手を繋いで家にかえる。それでほっとして読み終わることができる。

　ムーミンシリーズには二種類ある。一つは楽しい冒険譚で　もう一つは　どこか陰りを帯びた話だ。本作は後者の一例だと考えている。

　ムーミンたちの周りにいる人達の話だ。個人的には　台風だか竜巻だかで　家を吹き飛ばされる話が好きだった。堅苦しい伝統的な生活が　台風によって家が破壊されることによって　いったんリセットされ　自由な生活が始まるという筋は　そもそも暗示的である。
　ある意味で閉塞されている２１世紀の日本に住む僕らとして　この話に含まれる一抹の爽快感は否定できない。いや　ほのかに憧れてしまう。

　この話を小学生に読み取れということは難しい。逆に言うと　トーべヤンソン自身　これを子ども向けに書いたとも思えない。
　それほど大人びた話だ。
