　人間は受精卵の段階から培養ビンの中で「製造」され「選別」され、幼年時代から受けた巧妙な洗脳により、自らの「階級」と「環境」に全く疑問を持たず、生活に完全に満足している。親子関係もなく、家族関係もなく、夫婦関係もなく、性交渉は完全に自由である。全ての欲望は満たされ、不満や不安を抱く要素は全くない。万が一、ストレスが溜まった場合は「ソーマ」なる薬によって副作用なしに快楽を味わえる。人々は激情に駆られることなく常に安定した精神状態であるため、社会は完全に安定している。まさに楽園であり、「すばらしい世界」である・・・・・・一見したところでは。
　しかし鼻持ちならぬ階級意識と人間の尊厳性を踏みにじる管理統制によって作られた楽園の欺瞞は、保存地区＝＜野蛮＞からの来訪者、ジョン青年によって暴かれるのであった・・・・・　
　背筋の凍り付くような戦慄のユートピア社会を描き、救いのない結末を提示することで圧倒的な迫力と衝撃を持たせることに成功した反ユートピア小説の金字塔。実兄ジュリアン・ハックスリイらの優生学思想の危険性に警鐘を鳴らすに留まらず、人間社会の進路をも鋭く問うた問題作。Ｔ型フォードの大量生産で名を馳せた自動車王フォードが神様になっているという皮肉はちょっと笑える。

全体主義的な社会を描いたジョージ・オーウェルの「1984年」や、
ザミャーチンの「われら」と比べると、
イギリス人の書いたこの作品は、大衆消費文化の行き着く先、
という感じで、より、身につまされます。
というか、よく考えると、確かに、そういう社会制度にも、
一理あるような気がしてきて、結局、みんなが幸せになれるんなら、

それで良いジャン、と思っている自分に気づき、ショックを受けます。

何が正解か分からない世の中で、問題意識を持って、色々なことを、
考え続けるために、読み継がれて欲しい一冊です。

　階級ごとに体格も知能も発生時期の条件で決定され、壜から出た（生まれた）後も、睡眠時教育で条件反射になるようにいろいろなことが教え込まれ、完全に「生産」を制御された人たちの社会。不快な気分になったときは「ソーマ」と呼ばれる薬で「楽しい気分」になればよい。壜から出てくるので、家族はなく、男女の結びつきも「その時の楽しみ」である。社会は順調に廻っているようにみえるが、野心を抱いたり、ちょっと他人とは違うことに悩む人間はいる。そんな世界に、隔離された「蛮人保存地区」から連れ帰られた「母から生まれた」一人の青年を通して、文明のありかたを考えさせる。
　

数年に一度ぐらい、読み返す小説である。描かれた「空想された未来社会」は読み返す度に怖くなる。現在の世界と照らし合わせてみる。シャーレの中で受精卵から発生を進める技術も進んできた。発生のどの時期にどんなホルモンが出ることが適切か、などということもかなりわかってきた。「うつ」の治療に役立つ薬も実用化され、感情のメカニズムも随分と解明されてきた。年を追うごとに、この小説の中で描かれている技術はその当時予想されていたことを忠実に延長して考えられたものだということ、そしてその方向に科学技術は「順調に」進んできているのだ、と確認させられる。このお話の世界の展開が怖いだけに、現実の怖さも増してくる。

　青年とこの社会の総帥が文明についての対話をする場面があるが、文化や宗教について、今も変わらない議論を我々は続けていることに気付かされる。「なぜ古い、良いものを与えないのですか」と問う青年に総統は云う、「われわれは人びとが古いものに惹きつけられることを好まないのだ。われわれは人びとが新しいものを好むことを望んでいる。」日々、流行に、新しいニュースに惹きつけられては、すぐに少し前のものにさえ関心を失ってしまいがちな今のわたしたちはこの世界の人達とどれほど違うのだろうか。同じように新しいものを好むことを望まれ、引き回されているのではないだろうか。

　「（あなたたちは）辛抱することをおぼえる代わりに、不愉快なものはなんでもなくしてしまうんですね。・・・耐え忍びもしなければ戦いもしない。」と言い残してこの社会に背を向け、独り昔の原始的生活を始めた青年を、それでもまだこの社会は離さない。青年を追いかけてきたテレビカメラマンの言葉は「そりゃ、もちろん、わたしのほうの読者がとても興味をもつだろうと思うんですが。」。明日、この言葉が私にかけられてもおかしくないと思う世界に今生きているのが怖い。こうやって、幾つの物が追いかけられ、忘れ去られただろう。大事なものも忘れてしまったかもしれない。

　1932年にこの「未来社会を空想した」小説は書かれた。ヒトラーが、ムッソリーニが大統領になった年、満州国建国宣言がされた年。
