スペースは限られているのに物は溢れ、どうやって物を減らし、片付けるか、私たちが日々苦しんでいることですよね。子どもだって、そんな大人をちゃんと見ていて、ちょっと喉が渇けばペットボトルは買ってもらえるし、おもちゃだって何だって欲しいと言えばすぐに手に入ると考えています。そんな環境で「もったいない」の概念を教えるのはとても難しいこと。この本から、物を大切にする心を思い出し、子どもにも理解して欲しいと思いました。（子どもは楽しそうに「もったいない、もったいない」とつぶやいてます。）

もったいない事をするとどこからともなくやってくる、もったいないばあさんは迫力満点。しつけには厳しいけれど、丸めた紙やちびた色鉛筆を楽しい遊び道具に変えてくれる。どこにでもいそうだけど、最近都心では見かけないおばあちゃん。
アメリカ育ちの６歳の子どもに、もったいないの気持ちがわかるといいなと思って読み聞かせていたら、２歳の子も覗きに来て’くわ~い、おばっちゃん’と恐がるふりをしていました。彼らのおばあちゃんもそばで聞いていて’そうね、昔はみんな当たり前の事だったわね’と親子三代参加して読みました。
みかんの皮をとっておいて、寒い日にみかん風呂にしよう！と言ったら子ども達は大喜び。　
日本人の優しい心を忘れないように、ちょくちょく子ども達と一緒に’もったいないばあさん’遊びをしようかな。

話題になっていたので、買ってみました。おばあさんが出てきて、子供に「もったいない」と説いて回る話ですが、まあおばさんが若干古い感じのおばあさんであること（本当は若いお母さんとかにも、「もったいない」と言って欲しかった）を除いては、絵も好感が持て、文章も読みやすく、いい絵本だと思います。

この本をきっかけに、「もったいない」について４歳の娘と話しあうことができました。今では娘が、家の中の「もったいない」ことを探して指摘してくれます。以前には考えられない成長です。
