爽やかな文体に断片化された文章。
これがこの小説の一番の魅力だと思っています。

過ぎ去ったもの、失ったもの、捨ててしまったもの。
夏や海やビール、これまで感動できていたものが、いつからか、歳を重ねるにつれその輝きを失ってしまう。

そんな誰もが通り過ぎて来た（と思われる）数日間を描いた、青春小説です。

今や日本を代表するベストセラー作家村上春樹のデビュー作。自ら経営するジャズバーが終わったあと、ひとり夜中の台所で書いていたというこの小説は、一言で言えばとてもビールの飲みたくなる小説です。執筆できる時間が1日に限られていた為、今日はここまで書き上げよう、と決めて書いていたそうです。その結果がチャプターの多さに反映されています。作品の出来については賛否両論あると思いますが、僕は最近の作品よりも初期の作品のほうが好きです。特に2作目の「1973年のピンボール」までは兼業作家だったということもあり、とても楽しんで書いている感じがします。確かに筆力、構成力などは現在と比べるべくもありませんが、逆にそこに新鮮さを感じてしまいます。ちなみに作中登場するデレク・ハートフィールドという作家、僕は実在する人物だと思っていました・・・。

引っ越しをする度に、どこかへ消えてしまう文庫本だけど、忘れた頃に読み返したくなる作品。彼が作る丁寧な文体は癖になります。
