きちんと「自分の頭で」ものごとを考えている。私が彼と同じぐらいの年で仮に海外を放浪したとして、彼のように冷静に、客観的に、なおかつ自分のバックボーンも踏まえた上で、ものごとを見、考えることは果たしてできただろうか？

アメリカ〜ヨーロッパ〜アジア〜なかでもインド、と旅を続けるうちに、彼の中の「最低限」のレベルがどんどん下がっていく過程が興味深かった。食わず嫌いだったのか、彼の著作を読んだのはこれが初めてだったけれど、彼の「帰国後」の活動も少し追ってみたいと思った。これだけ世界をくまなく見た上で「傍観者」「批評家」になるのではなく、「活動家」を選んだ生き様に興味が出てきた。

私が１５歳か１６歳の頃、高校の期末試験か何かでサッカー部の練習がない日だったと思います。試験勉強はしない主義？だったので、何か本でも読もうかなと、学校帰りに駅前
の本屋に寄りました。
あの日の午後、あの本屋に入らなかったら、そしてあの本が棚に平積みされていなかったら、そしてその本を手に取らなかったら、今、私はここでこうしてタイのバンコクに来ていたでしょうか？
この文庫本をたまたま手に取ったことで、もしかしたらその後の私の人生が決定付けられたのかも知れません。
癌で闘病生活をされているということは聞いていましたが、こんなに早くこの日がくるとは・・・。
サッカー馬鹿だった私に、社会への目を開かせてくれたのは、間違いなく小田実さんのこの本でした。かなりのページ数ですが、１晩で読了しました。
その後、高校の世界史の先生に紹介された評論集など、彼の著作を貪るように読みました。
当初は呑気に高校を卒業したらサッカー部の先輩たちの多くが進学する大学の体育学部にでも行って高校の体育教師になろうかな？と考えていました。
でも、困ったことにそれどころじゃなくなってしまいました。
それまでサッカーで熱くなっていましたが、それよりもスケールの大きな熱さが世界中にはあるのだなあ・・・早く日本を飛び出したいなあ・・・と思うようになってしまいました。
そして、あの本を読んでから２０数年後、今、私はタイにいます・・・。
あ、駄目だ、目頭が熱くなってきた・・・。
参院選の自民党大敗のニュースが流れたその日、彼も旅立ちました。
何か象徴的な、ひとつの時代の区切りのような感じがします。
ご冥福をお祈りします。
そして貴重な気づきを与えてくれてありがとうございました。

著者が逝去され、著書を読んだことがなかったのであわてて「この一冊」と言えるものを探した結果、
『何でも見てやろう』を見つけた、いわばミーハー男です。
「一日一ドル」という旅が、今で言うとどのくらいなのかちょっと見当がつかなかったのが、残念と
言えば残念ですが、それでこの本の面白さが損なわれるわけではありません。
また「差別用語では？」と思われる単語がバンバン出てきて、著者のお人柄と当時の時代背景がよく
分かります。
どこの国でもすぐにとけ込み、親しい友人をもうけまくった様子がこれまた痛快。
ちょうと村上春樹氏の『遠い太鼓』を読んだ直後で、今風の満ち足りた旅と、三昔くらい前の超貧乏旅行の
対比がこれまた面白く、でもそれでいて著者がそれぞれ接した国々の人々の特徴はあまり変わっていない
ような印象です。
一流の作家による旅行記は文句なしに面白い、ということがこれでまた一段と確信できる一冊でした。
