誰でもココロのどこかに欠けている部分があると思います。
それは単に満たされていないという事にとどまらず、果たせなかった夢だとか、死に別れた大切な人だとか、悔いの残る結果を残してしまった事だとか、愛してるのに結ばれなかった恋人だとか、この物語で探しているものは、そういうココロに空いた『穴』のようなものを埋めてくれる『なにか』なのではないでしょうか。
もしくはモラトリアム期に誰もが強く感じたような理由のない孤独や喪失感との戦いかもしれないし、もしくは人生を共に歩んでゆけるパートナーを探しているかのようにも感じられます。
しかしこの本の結末で描かれているのは、それらに対しての明快な「答え」ではなく、結局は自分自身と向き合っていくことで解決の糸口となるのではないか、という提案でしょう。そこからまた新たな旅が始まり、そして続編の「ビッグ・オーとの出会い」へとさらなる飛躍をとげます。
シルヴァスタイン、そして訳者の倉橋さんが仰るように『ダメな大人』にも『そうでない大人』にもぜひとも読んでもらいたい物語です。

　どこか『Missing 』な主人公が、その代償を探す旅に出かける。幾多の障害を乗り越え、ようやっと『Missing 』な部分を見つけ、おおはしゃぎする彼。しかし実はその代償とは―――読む人の数だけ解釈があるこの本を、私は始め日本語訳で読んだために、原題を知らなかった。その後英語でこの本を読む機会を得たが、『Missing 』という原題を見て、私は初めてこの本が言わんとすることを理解した。
　『Missing 』を直訳すると「欠けている」となる。しかし、少し気の利いた辞書を引けば、そこには「(あるはずのものが)かけている」と付記されているはずである。
　「こうあるべき」姿と現実との乖離に愕然とする毎日。常に満たされていたい自分自身。作者は、この『Missing 』を通じて、自分に「欠けている」ものを必死の形相で探す人々の、「(あるはずのものが)」と言う、いわば無意識の大前提にこそ、疑問を投げかけたかったのではないだろうか？

シンプルな絵とことばの中にたくさんのメッセージが詰まっている素晴らしい作品です。完ぺき主義に悩まされている方におすすめしたいです。絵本はその年齢によって解釈の仕方が変わってくるもの。大人になってこの本に出会えて、私の人生観は大きく変わりました。
毎日が単調に思えたり、失敗だらけの人生を送っていると感じる方、相談相手を探すまえにこの本を開いてみてはいかかですか？
