「童夢」でSF漫画界に確固たる世界を作り上げた大友氏が、
長期に渡って"ヤング・マガジン"で連載していた作品を単行本化したものです。
(因みに、連載の途中で映画(アニメーション)化があり、
しばらくの間ヤンマガでは読めない期間がありました)

第三次世界大戦後のネオ東京でエネルギーを持て余すバイクチームの少年たち・・・
の話かと思いきや、
話は宇宙の成り立ちにまで及びます。
身体が震える程の凄まじい展開に「漫画」の認識が変わるかもしれません。

物語は、タイトルの「アキラ」よりバイクチームのリーダー、「金田」が中心で進みます。
アキラというものの正体が分かるのは第三巻です。
しかし、実はその金田さえ出てこない時期があるのですが、
決して中だるみする事なくストーリーがぐいぐいと突き進んでいきます。
むしろ、金田が出てこない時期のその理由がかなり先にさらりと描かれているのが
氏の作家としての凄さを表している事になるかもしれません。
この辺りの展開のうまさが、実に見事です。
練りに練り込まれた脚本の映画を観ているかのようです。

ヤンマガの連載もかなりお休みが多かったのですが、
実はこの単行本化は更に読者を待たせる事になりました。
というのも、連載の作品に大幅な加筆・修正を加えたのが単行本だからです。
恐ろしいまでの氏の作品への拘りを伺うことが出来ます。
話は同じでも、全くコマ割りや表情が違うシーンがざらにあります。
この偏執とも思える拘りは、映画版作成を挟んでの第五巻から更に盛り上がります。
なので、もし手に入れば、当時の連載と読み比べるのも面白いと思います。

'80年代初頭に始まったこの作品は、'88年(20年前！)の映画版を挟み、
'90年に幕を下ろします。
色褪せないどころか、未だに新鮮でわくわく出来る貴重な日本の財産です。

最後に・・・
よく「映画版と原作と、どちらか」という話になりますが
表現方法が違うのと、かなり展開も異なるので、
両者を比べる事も優劣を付ける事も無意味だと思います。
どちらも素晴らしい。
ふたつとも、AKIRAなんです。

是非、AKIRAという物語を体験してみてください。

ご存知の方も多い、大友氏の近未来SF。
時は第3次世界大戦後の21世紀初頭、場所は日本の首都ネオ東京。
なんのかんの言わずに読め、これは最高だ。

私は元々映画から入った一人だが、この作品の凄さは、
映画も漫画も別の物語なのに、それぞれが最高水準に達しているところ。
たいがいの作品は、原作は面白いけど、映画にすると端折り過ぎる、
映画は面白いけど、原作は冗長に過ぎる、ということがままある。
このAKIRAの凄さは、原作は原作で100%支持でき、映画は映画で100%支持できるところ。
そして、漫画ならでは凄さ、それは詳細にまで渡る筆致の細かさと、
魅力的な登場人物に、見事なコマ割。
余計な物を一切省いて純化したような物語性は見事である。
本作では、主人公：金田の下の名前も出てこなければ、
ヒロイン：ケイの名字もない。
でもキャラクタはしっかり立っているし、深みがある。
この凝縮された内容で、流れるような展開は、他の作品ではなかなか見られない。

基本は、エネルギーの有り余った若者のアクションなんで、
SFが苦手な人でも楽しめる作品です。
ぜひ皆さん読んでください。

妻の勧めで読み始めました。絵がとても細かくて読むのに時間がかかりますが、とにかく物語に引き込まれます。この第1巻はまだ序章にすぎないのですが、起承転結がこの1冊の中にしっかりと構成されていてこれだけでもかなり楽しめます。そしてきっと「AKIRAワールド｣にあなたも引きずり込まれると思います。私は既に全巻揃えてしまいました。
