第二次大戦中、ドイツ東部戦線において352機撃墜の記録を打ち立てたエーリッヒ・ハルトマンの伝記。撃墜記録よりも僚機パイロットに死者を出さなかった事を誇りとし、自身も無事に戦争を終えたことからも、彼が偉大なエースパイロットである事が解る。戦後、ソビエトに抑留され辛酸を舐める事になるが、屈することなく己自身を貫く柔軟かつ強靱な精神の持ち主である。この本の原書が刊行されたのは彼が西ドイツに帰国して15年経った1970年。それまでの彼の半生（幼少期から軍入隊、東部戦線での活躍、ソビエト抑留時代の苦闘、帰国後の軍務復帰と除隊）を彼自身と彼を取り巻く人々の証言を交えて語っている。

非常に貴重な体験談になります。
ドイツ空軍の戦術や人事の話（何か一つの規則違反が後々まで昇進に響く、また人事上の問題は大戦後の復興ドイツ空軍にもあてはまり、誰もこれを制御できない）
ヒトラーの様子にしても、これは非常に客観的に見ており、周囲の幕僚に問題があり、誰も総統に正確な情報を入れなかったこと。もし正確な情報を得ていれば、その後の連合国との交渉にも影響を与えていたであろうかと思われる内容です。
降伏後の話は、他の多くの文献と同様、ソビエト側の捕虜や婦女子に対する扱いが惨く多くの犠牲者が出るのを体験することになるのですが、ハルトマンのロシア人に対する見方は、憎悪ではないく、非常に客観的です。
この本では、戦闘シーンも多く扱っておりますが、撃墜王ハルトマンの体験した壮絶な体験記となっております。長期に及ぶソビエト抑留と、抑留中の反抗、ハンスト、そして信念を捻じ曲げずに帰還した姿からは、強い信念を持つことが大切なことだと考えさせられます。
