マンドリルの鮮やかな顔も、シマウマのお腹のしまも、キリンの首の標本も分かりやすい写真で紹介されています。

巻頭には｢動物の世界｣と題して、狩りの仕方(絵)･親子の姿・飛ぶ姿・素晴らしい知恵(以上写真)が載っており、特に、『モグラのミミズの食べ方』や『尻尾を日除け代わりに使うリス』の写真は大人でも面白いです。

巻末は「動物の情報館」になっていて、野生動物の観察の仕方や、ペットの簡単な飼育法などの他に、『絶滅動物園』の項目が興味深いです。マンモスなどの太古の動物と、近年人間によって絶滅に追いやられた数種や絶滅危惧種が紹介されています。幼い子供には難しいでしょうが、これは、知る必要のある大切なことだと感じます。未確認動物という、子供にも興味がわくものと一緒に紹介されているのも、幼心を長年掴んでいる学研らしい手法だなと感じました。

非常に丁寧に作られた動物図鑑だと感じました。

　４歳になる息子が動物に興味を持ち始めたので、絵本代わりに購入しました。動物園でも見ることのできないような珍しい動物に大興奮で、いろいろと質問をされましたが、わかりやすい説明文があり答えるのに役立ちました。大人が見ても十分楽しめる図鑑です。

ブックトークで「ニホンザル」をする時、越冬による野生化と混血で問題となっている近縁種の台湾ザルとアカゲザルの姿はおさえておくべきだろうと、図書館を探しました。結果、かろうじて両方が載っている図鑑は、これだけでした。他の図鑑もネット検索も、どちらか一方の写真かイラストしか載ってませんでした。来年の干支で「サル」がにわか流行りすると思われますので、参考までに。
