ゴルフジャーナリスト。福聚山長命寺副住職。1960年生まれ、新潟県松代町(現十日町市)出身。駒澤大学卒業後、月刊誌出版社を経て、週刊パーゴルフに。85年から編集記者としてプロツアーを中心に、広くゴルフ界の取材に携わる。週刊・月刊パーゴルフの副編集長を経て、96年に学研を退社。以降、旅行誌編集長を務めつつ、フリーの編集記者として活動。現在は故郷新潟の里山の町で、読経と原稿締め切りに追われる日々を送る。元日本ジャーナリスト専門学校講師(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

坂田塾がこれだけ実績をあげているなかで、全体像を把握するのにはよくまとまっている。だが、写真などが挿入されているものの、これで理論を実践しようとするには物足りない。ショートスイングからジャイロまでその過程と効果を理解した人が、その次に期待する部分が足りないのだ。教育方針があるのは好感できるが。。ある程度新書では仕方ないと考えたい。

ゴルフを止めてから２０年も経ちましたが、もしかしたら６０才を過ぎて再開するかも知れ
ないと思い、ある書評を頼りにこの本を読んでみました。

今の理論は知りませんが、昔は右の壁を作れとか、バックスイングでゼンマイを巻くように
体を絞って、フォアスイングで一気に解放せよとか、チャー・シュー・メーンで打てだとか、
色々言われたものでしたが、力学的に考えてどうも納得できないでおりました。というか、
その胡散臭さみたいなもの故にゴルフが嫌になってしまったも言えます。
野球の打者は、ゼンマイなど巻かずにリラックスした状態からホームランをかっ飛ばすでは
ありませんか。テニスでも同じことです。

坂田理論は２つの柱からなっていて、一つはショートスイング、もう一つはピボットスイング
であり、本書では、まずそれらが入門書的に説明されています。ショートスイングをインパクト
ゾーンと捉えその練習を繰り返し行う、ピボットスイングで体を自由に回転させてスイング
するのだといいます。それらを読んで私は目から鱗で、何かもう一度ゴルフをやってみたい
気持ちになって来ました。

ところで、本書は坂田氏の理論に関する100％の技術書ではありません。著者のゴルフ
ジャー
ナリスト山本氏は、上田桃子、古閑美保を始めなぜ坂田塾出身者が多数プロゴルファーと
して活躍しているのか、それを技術面と教育面から解説しています。
世界に通用するゴルファーを育成するために立ち上げられた坂田塾、その創設と運営は
多くの人のボランティアで成り立っているといいます。このような活動が日本にあったのか、
と感動的で、「日本人の底力」を感じさせる内容です。
坂田塾では、保護者は子供の練習やラウンドを一切見ることができません。教えてもいけません。
子供達は保護者から徹底的に隔絶されています。その中で、ボランティア達がマニュアルに
従って子供の面倒を見、子供達は技術と共に人間として成長して行く過程が描かれております。
長くなるので端折ります。その教育方針も保護者の考えや塾生個人の考えや都合でうまく
行かない例が生じて来ているといいますが、そこに寂しさを覚えます。
この本を読み終わって、石川遼君の将来がちょっと心配になって来ました。
