「レコードはまっすぐに」を読んで、Ring Resoundingの新訳を心待ちにしていましたが、出版決定を知った時は非常に嬉しかったです。内容も前掲書に劣らず素晴らしく、あっという間に読了しました。
歯に衣着せぬカルショーの秀逸な文章力は、ドキュメンタリーの域を超え、指環録音のレコード史における意義にまで及びます。また、人気歌手を世界中からウィーンに集め録音するため、分刻みのスケジュールを組み、トラブル発生のたびのリスケジュールの繰り返し･･･。これらのスケジュールとの闘いは私達の仕事でもあることです。録音を巡る音楽ビジネスの舞台裏の記述ですが、そこには確実にロマンがあります。ショルティも問題解決の局面で非常に重要な役回りを演じ、これがもしワンマン指揮者だったらこのプロジェクトは成功していなかったと思います。
また、著者自身がプロモーション用の講演を通じて聴衆の反応を確かめ、作品のリリースが進むごとに聴衆の反応が進化していることに著者が知る場面は心を動かされました。

「指環」について前知識があること、できればショルティの「指環」を聞いている人ならば、興味深い一冊になることでしょう。今では当然のようなオペラ録音も、黎明期の職人達の丁寧な仕事の成果があったからこそ、ということを改めて思いました。

クラシック録音史上の金字塔、「指環」初のスタジオ全曲録音誕生の記録をプロデューサーである著者自らが語った書。若かりし頃の黒田恭一氏による日本語訳は長らく絶版になっており待望の新訳での再版。

いうまでもなく「指環」四部作は、上演に四夜を要する超大作。この録音の演奏時間は、１４時間半にもおよぶ膨大なもの。録音が開始された１９５８年当時、カルショーは４１歳、指揮者のショルティは４５歳、指揮者としての経歴はわずか１１年に過ぎない。音楽産業が若かったゆえの冒険とはいえ商業的にも大きなリスクだ。録音に要した年月は８年。ドレスリハーサルともいうべき１９５７年の名ワグナー歌手フラグスタートとの「ワルキューレ」第３幕の録音から数えれば９年となる。それを成し遂げた偉業の裏舞台が包み隠さず描かれている。

読み手の興味や知識によって様々な切り口で読むことが可能。ＬＰステレオ黎明期の職人達の録音現場。戦後間もないころのレコード業の経営やオペラ界の裏話。わがままな歌手たちや誇り高いウィーンフィルの楽士たち。若きショルティの実像。「指環」の聴きどころ…などなど。偉業の裏舞台を彩るエピソードの数々は詳細で多様で読み応え十分。クラシック音楽ファンとしては是非座右に置いておきたい。

クラシック録音記録の金字塔「ニーベルングの指輪」はこうして創られた、というのがプロデューサーの面から描かれた一冊。「レコード芸術」には、指揮者と演奏者だけでなく、プロデューサーが必要であり、どのように関わったかを端的に当事者が語った本。レコード(ＣＤ)とＤＶＤと本書を「聞き」、「見て」、「読む」といっそう興味深い。
