うまい作家だなあと思う。小さなエピソードを重ねて、人の仮面の裏側を暴いてていく。幽霊も怪物も出てこない。出てくるのは人間だけ。そこが、こわい。
良い本だが、手に取った後での注意点をふたつ。
ひとつ、本文を読む前に解説を読んではならない。
ひとつ、ジャクスンの代表作『くじ』『たたり』を未読なら、本文を読んだ後も解説を読んではならない。

村の中でも旧家のブラックウッド家、ワケあって村中の人から忌み嫌われていて、姉妹と彼女らの伯父の三人で、ほとんど屋敷から出ずに暮らしている。訪問客もほとんどなかったが、それなりに楽しく毎日を送っていたところに、いとこだという若い男が現れたことで、平穏な日々が壊れ出していく・・・。

シャーリイ・ジャクスンは幽霊屋敷ものの傑作として名高い「山荘綺談」（「たたり」より「山荘綺談」のほうがピッタリ）や短編「くじ」の作者として著名ですが、本作もなかなかのもの。「山荘綺談」では超自然的なものを扱っていたのですが、ここではそういったものは一切出てきません。それでも怖い。とても怖い。はじめは村の人々に邪険にされる姉妹に同情するのですが、読み進めていくうちに、無邪気さの中にある狂気、残酷さに背筋がヒヤリとしてきます。幽霊など出てこない分だけ余計に怖い。

怖い小説は好きだけど、最近あふれ返っている「ジャパニーズ・ホラー」とやらに食傷気味の方もいるでしょう。そんな方は、一昔前の作品に目を向けてみては。中でもシャーリイ・ジャクスンの諸作はおすすめ。十分な怖さと満足感が味わえること、請け合いです。

本書は、病める女性の内なる狂気と錯乱、これに尽きます。

「あれ、自分はひょっとすると周りと少しずれた時空に属しているかもしれない」という感じは、誰しも一度は抱いたことがあると思います。本書はその雰囲気を極限まで推し進めたらというジャクスンの思考実験であるとも読むことができて、そういう意味では『くじ』と並ぶジャクスンの代表作です。
