「犬の消えた日」のその後のお話である。戦時中にお国のためと言われて飼い犬を供出しなければならなくなった少女を主人公にした「犬の消えた日」には実在のモデルがいる。戦後60年を過ぎ、戦時中の犬の供出について知る人が少なくなってきたのを感じた著者が、当時の記憶を語ってくれる人々を訪ねて取材したのが本書。

まずは戦時中の犬の供出命令の資料、供出された犬の毛皮で作られた軍用の衣服などを探し求めた。つぎには、泣く泣く犬や猫を手放した人（当時は子供だった）の証言、そして供出した犬や猫、うさぎなどを殺す仕事に携わった人の証言。この方は60年たったいまも、泣きながら犬や猫を連れてきた子供を夢に見ると言う。非国民と呼ばれる覚悟で犬や猫を供出しなかった人の証言もある。現在天然記念物に指定されている川上犬もこうした人のお陰で守られたのだ。

本書は児童書にしては重い内容であるが、犬や猫という身近な存在に降りかかった悲劇を通して、戦争と平和を考える入り口になるのではないかと思う。親子で読んで欲しい本だ。

戦時中は動物を飼ってられる余裕は無い、象の話しは有名だが身近な小動物も例外ではない、そんな話。戦線へ毛皮として使われたり、野良になることで人間を襲うリスクを回避する為にペットとして飼われている動物も政府に持っていかれそれぞれ殺される。戦争が悲惨だと言うことを伝える為にこういう視点での読み物も必要だな、と痛感。この内容の資料集めも聞きまわることも大変だったと思うし、色んな涙とともに読んで欲しい一冊。

戦争というと、人の死を考えることは当然だが、犬や猫もまた、こんなふうに理不尽に
命を奪われていたことを初めて知りました。
「供出」
・人が食べるのが精一杯だから、動物にまわす食料などない。
・空襲時にパニックを起こし、人を襲うかもしれない。
・寒さをこらえ闘っている軍人のための毛皮をつくる。
様々な理由を以て、犬や猫を強制的に供出させて、殺していた。

泣く泣く愛犬・愛猫を供出した人、それを殺す役割の人、非国民と言われても
供出を拒んだ人。
共通するのは、戦争のために辛い思いをしたということ。
愛するペットを強制的に殺された人の心の傷は深いだろうし、
殺す役目の人も、好きでやっていたわけではないのだから、トラウマになったのでは
ないだろうか。

国のため、戦争に勝つため。
非常時というものは、平和な時の理屈など通らない。

そんな恐ろしい状況は日本にとっては過去の話かもしれないが（特に戦争を知らない若い
人には）、世界には、まだ現在進行形でこの状況を生きている人がいることを忘れては
いけない。

改めて気づかせてくれる本でした。
