利他的な振る舞いが結果として自分の利益になることを、生物学的に説明した本。著者はデンマークの科学ジャーナリスト。

この本は、米国の経済学者Thorstein Veblenの著書「有閑階級の理論」を、生物学に拡張しながら、利他的に振る舞う有利さを説明する。贅沢や浪費は自分の力を顕示し、周囲(特に異性)から注目を集める手段となる。これと同じように、直接的に自分の利益にならない行為は、自分に余裕があることを異性にアピールする手段になる。つまり、利他的に振る舞う「良い」個体は、性的選択で有利なポジションを得られ、「生きのびる」ことができる。様々な動物や人間の例を使ってそれを示している。

情けは人のためではなく、回り回って自分に戻ってくる。利己的な遺伝子だけでは解釈できない、進化の多様性を示した本といえるだろう。

デンマークで出版された進化心理学をベースとした啓蒙書　兼　著者独自の文明論．
構成としては前半は人類の進化における性選択の重要性とその帰結についての解説で，後半はそれを踏まえたうえでの文明論となっている．

前半の趣旨は実験経済学で明らかになった人の非合理性は性選択にその究極因があるというもので，ジェフリーミラーのMating Mindの主張をなぞっている．

後半部分は著者の独自の主張で，前半とは異なり今度は証拠も何もない「私はこう思うんだよね」風の文明論である．要するに性選択によって形成された「贈り物の心．分け与える心」ｖｓ経済的合理性という軸を「情報，知識」ｖｓ「財」さらに「ネットワーク」vs「国家」と捉えて．これからの地球環境，南北問題，移民問題を考えるにはこういう性選択による価値観が重要だと説いている．オープンソースを持ち出して，性選択を強調するところは目新しいといえば目新しい．
人間の本性とか性選択に興味のある人は本書よりジェフリーミラーのMating Mind(邦訳タイトル「恋人選びの心」）がはるかにお勧めです．
文明論として読むなら，目新しい文明論を好む人にはいいかもしれません．

翻訳について一言

まだ英訳もされていないような本を訳して出版するのはなかなか大変だったであろうと思われるが，前半について言えばとにかく訳が悪すぎる．原書はデンマーク語で訳者は多方面で活躍している法律家の方のようだが，これだけ進化生物学を踏まえている本にもかかわらず，どうも全く進化生物学に造詣がなく，最小限の下調べもしていないようでお話にならない．

たとえば「有性生殖」を「セクシャリティ」，｢血縁選択｣を｢親族選択｣，｢至近因｣｢究極因｣を｢直接的要因｣｢終局的要因｣，また選択の単位で個体か遺伝子かという場合の個体（Organism）を有機体と訳していたり，少しは調べてくれよといいたくなる用語のオンパレードである．

文体は直訳調で読みにくく，さらにところどころ文脈から見て明らかな誤訳がある．進化生物学に明るくない読者はおそらく意味が取れないのではないかと思われる．

受験生の英文和訳のような翻訳である。利他的に振る舞うことが自分のためになるのだということが繰り返し述べられているが内容はそれだけのような気がしたことと、とにかく読みにくすぎるので途中で読むのを止めてしまいました。
