家出するとしたら、何で出かけるだろう？　電車？バス？とても船などは思いつかない。この主人公テリーは、海の近くに住んでいたというのもあるけれど、思いがけない発想で家出計画をたてます。でも、船は嵐にあう、海賊には捕まる、とさんざんなのだけど、アクシデントもポジティブにとらえ、ハッピーになる不思議な物語。ちょっぴりＨなところもアクセント。
こういう物語を書いてる作家が若者に受けてカリスマ作家になるなんて、なんかいいな。

すごく夢中になって読んだ。同じような年頃のテリ―のポジティブな考え方が私にすごく影響を与えた。ただ海賊にさらわれたなんてつまんないけど、この本は恋愛があったり、家族関係であったり、ティーンエイジャーの目線で書かれてるから、あまり本を読まないような若い人でもスラスラ読めること間違いなし!

毎日あれして、これして・・・という記述。そこにちょっとした冒険とちょっとエッチな話が混じって、今時の若者言葉で軽く進んでいく。割と正直に赤裸々に感情を表現していて、小説というよりも日記に近い感じ。なので、面白い。

翻訳はいまいちだが、それをあまりある面白さだった。アメリカの人気コミック『テリーと海賊』をもとに書いた小説なので、コミック的な軽妙さがあり、場面ごとに絵が思い浮かぶよう。登場するキャラクター達もそれぞれ個性的で、それぞれ魅力的。これもまた絵が思い浮かぶようだ。こと細かな描写は、やはり日記的。

これまでの海洋冒険小説と違うのは、行った先が絶望的な無人島というわけではなく、表向きは無人島だが、そこに住んでいた海賊は文明的な生活をしていて、周りにはアメリカの一般的商品があふれているということ。

それと、主人公のテリーの性格が前向きで明るく、ちゃんとした常識も持ち合わせているのが救われる。家出はしたけれど、大人に反抗したわけじゃない。「翼を広げよう」という!あ!くまでも前向きな一大決心だったりするのだ。人殺しも暴力もあたりまえのように書かれている物語が氾濫している中で、健康的で明るい、ほっとする物語だった。

気軽に読める文体でマンガのように読めた。
その割には飽きさせることなく最後まで楽しめた。
テリーのポジティブな性格に好感がもてた。
