阿刀田 高
1935年東京生まれ。早稲田大学文学部仏文科卒。国立国会図書館に司書として勤務するかたわらコラムを執筆、78年『冷蔵庫より愛をこめて』でデビュー。著作に第32回日本推理作家協会賞短編賞「来訪者」、第81回直木賞『ナポレオン狂』、第29回吉川英治文学賞『新トロイア物語』など多数。聖書、ギリシア神話、シェイクスピア等の古典を小説家の視点で読み解いた教養書でも知られる(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

5.0 out of 5 stars 相変わらず軽快な文学案内 in イタリア　です, 2008/2/5
「ギリシア神話を知っていますか」から続く、阿刀田高氏のヨーロッパ古典シリーズ（「アラビアン・ナイト」「コーラン」の巻もありますがおおむねこれ）最新刊です。次は何かなぁ…と思っていたら、ついに来ました、イタリア編。ダンテの「神曲」です。

「神曲」はやはりヨーロッパの魂のひとつでもあると思うんですが、訳書をそのまま読んでも冗長で、なかなか面白みを感じるところまでいきません（私の不勉強もありますが）。このダンテの地獄めぐりを短編の名手、阿刀田氏がいつものとおりに軽やかに解説してくださいます。

このシリーズを通じて非常に気に入っているのは、原文にひそむ、ヨーロッパ（や中東）人なら当たり前でも日本人なら「それってどうよ？」と思う点が素直に示されつつ前に進んでいけるところです（その程度で地獄の業火に焼かれるのか、とか）。当時のイタリア貴族の勢力関係も分からなければ「神曲」は面倒な読み物なのですが、これもさらりと解説してダンテの俗物っぽさを浮かび上がらせます。至上の女性、ベアトリーチェも確かにきれいで清らかだろうけど、何となくウソっぽい？なぁ…とちょっと意地悪に思わせながら楽しく読み進められます。

「神曲」だけ研究していてもかなりの著作にできる業界もあると思うのですが、一般の文芸書としてこれだけコンパクトに美しく読ませていただけるありがたさにこの評価としたいと思います。気が早いですが、次回作も楽しみです。

『神曲』を現代版にテキスト化してあります。永井郷のマンガ版と一緒に読むとビジュアルがイメージできます。この思考パターンに日本人を当てはめると官僚、役人、政治家は死んだ後に永久の懺悔の行為をすることになるでしょう。生きて肉体が動き、生存時間がたっぷりとあるうちに読んでおきたい予言書です。

ルネサンス時代の初頭に燦然と輝くキリスト教古典文学「神曲」。だれもが教科書で名前は習ったような気がするが、しかし簡単に読めるわけではない。この時代のキリスト教の世界観、ローマ史、ギリシャ神話などに言及されているのだから、今の時代の日本人が理解するのは相当難しいと思う。

　ある人材育成会社では、35〜40歳程度のミドル研修に神曲を取り入れて自らの人生を振り返ることを実施していると聞いたので、入門として読んでみた。

　著者は易しく読めるように、大変に平易に、そしてめんどくさいところはバサッと切り落として1冊の本にしてしまった。ここまでそぎ落とすには相当の苦労があったと思うが、切り落としすぎて何だかだまされたような気分になる。
